Introduction

This is a guide for typing mathematics correctly and clearly in order to avoid losing points in exam
settings. In this guide you will find the most frequent math symbols that you will need; you can copy and
paste them in the exam. Moreover, the guide provides you with rules that will improve your typing
quality. Finally, few examples are worked out to illustrate what and what not to do.

Symbols (you can copy and paste these)

The PI Symbol π
The Theta Symbol θ
The Degree Symbol °
The Union Symbol ∪
The Intersection Symbol ∩
The Empty Set ø
Inverse Trig arcsin, arccos, arctan

Typing Rules
1. The Basic Math Symbols
The addition symbol is “+” and the subtraction symbol is “-“
The multiplication symbol is “*”
The division symbol is “/”.
The power symbol is “^”
The root can be indicated with “sqrt()”
The equal sign is “=”
The decimal point is “.”

2. Separate Mathematical Equations

You should always treat a mathematical equation as a sentence, meaning that you should follow the
rules of punctuations. Whenever possible, it is better to separate different equations by skipping a line.

3. Follow Order of Operations

In any mathematical expression the operations are understood in the following order: powers, then,
multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction. Therefore, if you want to prioritize an operation over
another, you should use paratheses “( )”.

4. Solving Equations
When typing a solution of an equation, each step should be separated following rule (2).
Common Mistakes
Mistake Correction
The decimal form of 3/2 is 1,5 The decimal form of 3/2 is 1.5
The minus sign is typed using “_” Use “-“
The multiplication sign is typed using “x” Use “*”
The division sign is typed using “\” Use “/”
The numbers 3, 6, and 8 has an average = 3+6+8/3 average=(3+6+8)/3
Typing “two + x, then times three”: (2+x)*3
2+x*3
Solving 2y+4=0: 2y+4=0
2y+4=-4=-2 2y=-4
y=-2

More Math Typing Examples

The expression Should be
𝑥+𝑦 (x+y)/2
2
* if you type x+y/2, it will be understood as: first divide y by 2, then add the result to x.
The expression Should be
2 2/(x+1)
𝑥+1
* if you type 2/x+y, it will be understood as: first divide 2 by x, then add the result to y.
The expression is typed

√𝑥 + 3 sqrt(x+3)
* if you type sqrt x+3, it will be understood as: first find the square root of x, then add the result to 3.
