Final Reflection Paper

Technical writing, English 3140, has improved me as writer, tremendously. The main
aspect that this class helped me with was learning how to write for specific audiences, and how
to tailor my writing for the occasion. I had little practice writing professional documents, the
only experience I had was writing lab reports and some research papers. So, with that, this course
allowed me to expand how I write and learn who I am as a writer. This course also allowed me to
grow my confidence in my writing, since all of my work was validated by the professor. I know
before this course, I struggled a lot in my confidence and always believed I was a mediocre.
Which now, after the class, I feel much more confident and believe that I am capable of writing
well thought out work. I believe that my confidence really began to develop after I completed my
first assignment, the resume and cover letter, because of the positive feedback I received on it. I
also see an improvement in my writing skills as a whole. I feel like since the class offered so
much guidance for each assignment, I was able to learn how to write properly for different
occasions. One big thing I noticed was my ability to notice when I am writing passive vs active,
which has always been a challenge for me.
My goal for this course was obviously to do well but also to just improve on my writing
and become a better conscious writer. I was able to meet all of these goals. Throughout the
course, I feel that I continuously pushed myself to produce exceptional work, which ultimately
allowed me to improve my writing. I saw an improvement in my thought process before writing,
being able to convey my ideas in an appropriate manner and my ability to write concisely. I also
achieved my goal in becoming a more conscious writer. I used to really struggle with using filler
words, adding in extra sentences that weren’t needed and going off on tangents. This class
allowed me to learn how to write only what I need to get my ideas across and avoid filler words,
phrases, and sentences.
I am most proud of my white paper packet because I feel like this was my best work.
Although this assignment was challenging at first, I feel like I was able to pull it together and
produce exceptional work. I really enjoyed my topic for this assignment, I felt it was very
unique. I believe I was able to take a topic that most wouldn’t think about, present it in an
interesting and intriguing manner, all while completing the assignment at hand. Although the
white paper packet is the assignment I am most proud of, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the

assignments. If I could add an assignment to the class, it would be some sort of group project. I
feel that individual writing is important, but I also feel it is important to learn how to
collaboratively write. In my future field of study, all of the writing is collaborative, for the most
part, so this is a skill I wish I could’ve expanded on. If I could edit an assignment in the class, it
would be the engagement project. I would first make this assignment due in the middle of the
semester since it is time consuming, I would rather it not be around the finals period. I would
also make this project not be tied to the Reaktion book, since some people choose books that are
hard to capture in a normal setting. For example, I chose islands, which I found it quite difficult
to capture “island like” scenes in my normal environment. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the
class and would recommend it to anyone who is wanting to improve their writing skills.
