Task Sheet #3 For Lesson 3 - Remoroza, Dinnah H.

This one-page task sheet contains questions to define statistical terms and calculate statistics from frequency distribution tables. Students are asked to define mean, median, mode, percentile, decile, and quartile. They must then calculate the mean, median, mode, 75th percentile, 3rd decile, and 1st quartile from a given frequency distribution table with 100 observations ranging from 15 to 102 in classes of 11 units. The answers are provided.

A. Enlightenment Discussion Questions (2 points each; 12 points)

Define each term:

1. Mean
The mean (average) of a data set is found by adding all numbers in the data set and
then dividing by the number of values in the set.

2. Median
The median is the middle number in a sorted, ascending or descending, list of
numbers and can be more descriptive of that data set than the average.
The median is sometimes used as opposed to the mean when there are outliers in
the sequence that might skew the average of the values.

3. Mode
The mode is the value that appears most often in a set of data values. If X is a
discrete random variable, the mode is the value x at which the probability mass
function takes its maximum value. In other words, it is the value that is most likely
to be sampled.

4. Percentile
A percentile (or a centile) is a measure used in statistics indicating the value below
which a given percentage of observations in a group of observations falls.

5. Decile
In descriptive statistics, a decile is any of the nine values that divide the sorted data
into ten equal parts, so that each part represents 1/10 of the sample or population.
A decile is one possible form of a quantile; others include the quartile and
percentile.

6. Quartile
A quartile is a statistical term that describes a division of observations into four
defined intervals based on the values of the data and how they compare to the entire
set of observations.
