Math-3 - Module-7 Calculus Integration by Parts

This document provides an overview of integration by parts and examples of its application. It begins with the integration by parts formula: ∫udv = uv - ∫vdu. It then provides 4 examples of integrals involving algebraic and trigonometric or exponential functions and solves each using integration by parts. The examples include: ∫xexdx, ∫x2sinxdx, and ∫arctan3xdx. It concludes with assignments for students to evaluate additional integrals using integration by parts and a due date of September 14, 2021.

Unit 2: Module 7: Integration by Parts

Suppose u and v are differentiable functions of x, recall the differential formula;

d(u.v) = udv + vdu or udv = d(u.v) – vdu

Integrating both sides:

∫ udv = ∫ d(u.v) - ∫ vdu

❖ Method of Integration by parts when the integrand is a product of two

kinds of function

1. ∫ x e x dx algebraic and exponential

2. ∫ x 2 sin x dx algebraic and trigonometric

3. ∫ e x cosx dx exponential and trigonometric

4. ∫ x sinx dx algebraic and logarithmic

Example 1: Evaluate ∫ x ex dx
Sol’n: let u = x; dv = e x dx

du = dx v=ex

∫ x ex dx = xex- ∫ e x dx
= xex–ex+C answer

Example 2: Evaluate ∫ x 2 sin x dx

Sol’n: let u = x 2; dv = sin x dx ;

du = 2x dx v = - cos x

∫ x 2 sin x dx = x 2 (-cos x) - ∫ (-cos x) 2x dx

= - x 2 cos x + 2 ∫ x cox x dx
let u = x; dv = cos x dx

du = dx v = sin x

= - 𝑥 2 cos x + 2 x sin x - ∫ sin x dx

= - 𝑥 2 cos x + 2 x sin x – ( - cos x ) + C

= - 𝑥 2 cos x + 2x sin x + 2 cos x + C answer

Example 3: Evaluate ∫ 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝟑𝒙𝒅𝒙

𝑑 1 𝑑𝑢
Let u = arctan3x dv = dx (arctan 𝑢) = . 𝑑𝑥
𝑑𝑥 1+ 𝑢2
