Let Us Learn

Hey there! Are you excited about your new learning journey? Today,
you will be learning another important writing and reading strategies. In this
module, you be extracting ideas and make a summary, a précis, and a
paraphrase.

In this module, you will be accomplishing series of exercises to help

you improve your interpreting skills. After going through this, you are
expected to:

1. define summary, précis, and paraphrase through “Six-Letter Solution

Game”;

2. express the importance of summarizing, making a précis, and

paraphrasing through constructive written explanation; and

3. extract information from a text using summarizing, making a précis,

and paraphrasing through short reading activity (EN7WC-II-c-5).

1
Let Us Try

This activity is called Six-Letter Solution Game. In this game you will
guess the three secret words and to know what these words are, you need to
omit six letters in each group. Just mark “X” the letter you would like to
omit. Are you excited? Don’t worry there will be a definition given to each
group as your hint. Go and play!

S Q U M V M A Z X P R T Y

It is a brief statement that gives the most important points of

something.

P Y Q R L É X C A I Z S

It is a way of summarizing in which the tone, proportions, and

meaning of the original text are maintained.

P Y A W R K A P S H C R A F S E

It is to repeat something written or spoken using different

words, often in a humorous form or in a simpler and shorter form that
makes the original meaning clearer.

2
Let Us Study
How are you doing so far? Are you learning from your exercises?
Before we move on, first let us be guided with this discussion.

 Summaries omit the details, and focus on the core, most important
points in a longer piece of information. It determines essential ideas
and consolidates important details that support them. It enables the
readers to focus on key words and phrases of an assigned text that
are worth noting and remembering. To do the summarizing you need
to read first the whole selection and identify the main ideas, the
crucial details necessary for supporting details and the irrelevant and
unnecessary information. Lastly, use the key words/phrase to
identify the main points from the text.

Example:

Original Text: The amphibians which are the animal class, to

which our frogs and toads belong, were the first animals to crawl from
the sea and inhabit the earth.
Summary: The first animals to leave the sea and live on dry
land were the amphibian.

 When you write a précis, you use one or two concise sentences to give
the essence of a passage. A précis is a concise summary. It should
contain only the essential points, statements, or facts with the focus
on reproducing the logic, organization, and emphasis. To present a
shortened version of a source, while maintaining key words, data, or
concepts from the original. To do the précis you need to identify and
use the keywords used in the original text or speech, then maintain
the order and structure of the original and serve as a shorter
substitute for the original text or speech. See the example below.

Example:

Original Text: Laura made a terrible, terrible mistake when she

took David’s letter from him, and Henry had to despise her with all his
heart her name, which was the best evidence of his great devotion and
love.
Précis: Although Henry was angry with Laura, he was still in
love with her.

 When you paraphrase, you retell the story in your own words in a
passage that is about the same length as the original. A paraphrase

3
thus has no space limits. Indeed, a paraphrase might be much longer
than the original text.

Example:

Original Text: common belief can change over time. For

example, most people once thought the Sun orbited around the Earth.
Paraphrase: People believe at one time that the Sun orbited the
Earth. Nowadays, people know the opposite, showing that common beliefs
don’t stay the same.

It seemed that you have an idea already on what you will be learning
in this module. Great! Read the selection below and answer the following
questions. Go and begin!

'Health' is a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is thus a level of
functional efficiency of living beings and a general condition of a person’s
mind, body and spirit, meaning it is free from illness, injury and pain. It is a
resource of everyday life and a positive concept emphasizing physical
capabilities.

Good health is a secret of every happy man. There is an old saying,

'Health is Wealth'. Staying healthy for children is vital for proper growth and
development of mind and body as they need to focus in the class and fully
participate in the activities on the field. Parents must take their children for
medical check-up and learn from experts about their development in terms
of height and weight, as it has a huge impact on their overall performance
and efficiency. If you are strong and healthy, you can be a shining example
to others and teach them how to achieve vibrant health.

Good health is a matter of great concern, to maintain it, healthy living

and a disciplined life is a must. One of the best ways is to drink plenty of
water as it reduces the risk of infection, keeps your skin healthy, reduces
the risk of heart attack, burns body fat and regulates our body temperature.
We should sleep well as it relaxes our body and reduces stress. We need to
have a balanced diet and go for long, brisk walks. Our motto should be to
keep our body clean in order to remain healthy. We must laugh more as
laughing is a therapy and a secret of good health. The government should
include integrated health programs into their public policies and control
specific health problems.

Lessons One Can Learn About Life of a Dog

There are so many lessons one can learn about life from a dog.
Imagine this scenario: it is raining heavily outside and you need to leave for
someone's house. The dog is up and eager, to go with you. You tell it to stay
home. As you leave, you see it squeezing out through the gap in the
doorway. You scold it and order it back home. Then at every turn you make,
you suddenly see it following you sheepishly at a distance. It follows at the
risk of being reprimanded for the sore reason of being somewhere nearby.
How else can we experience so selfless an instance of love and faithfulness?
We can learn a lifelong lesson from this sincere warm display of perpetual
companionship.
Observe the eating habits of your dog. It does not eat, except when
hungry. It does not drink, unless it is thirsty. It does not gorge itself. It stops
eating when it has had enough.
A dog also sets a perfect example of adaptability. If it is moved to a
strange place, it is able to adapt itself to that place and to its thousand
peculiarities without a murmur of complaint. It is able to learn and adapt to
a new family's ways and customs. It is quick and ready to please. Man,
being accustomed to comfort and wealth will be lost if suddenly stripped of
all he is accustomed to.

8
A dog also teaches us a thing or two about, unselfish love. When a dog
knows death is approaching, it tries, with its last vestige of strength, to
crawl away elsewhere to die, in order to burden its owners no more.
A dog does things with all vigor. However, when there is nothing to do,
it lies down and rests. It does not waste its strength and energy needlessly.
Many working people are burning the candles at both ends. Many suffer
nervous breakdowns due to stress. Perhaps, they should learn to rest like a
dog does. A dog above all is truly man's best friend.

Well done! You have just summarized the information.

Let Us Reflect

It looks like you are through with this module! Congratulations for
actively engaging in the different activities prepared for you.

Reading is not merely reading the text. Paraphrasing, making a précis,

and summarizing are strategies that will help you (reader) to understand
what you are reading and to communicate information to others as you
expound and shorten points using your own words. These strategies also
improve your memory and evaluate what you are reading and even your own
understanding. That is why learning and practicing these strategies are very
essential and highly needed for academic and personal growth. If you find it
difficult now, just keep on practicing and keep on reading because it will
take time for you to master it. What is important is that you are slowly
learning and willing to improve yourself.

Good luck on your application of these strategies in your daily

communication!
