OPENING PRAYER
Please have your proper prayer posture. Feel God’s eminent presence.
In your goodness and mercy, you have looked with favor on your people
in the Philippines and have chosen from among them, your lowly
handmaid, Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, to be the foundress of a religious
family under the special protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
We humbly ask you then, to glorify your name in her, by performing the
miracles needed for her beatification, through your son, our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.
That with God’s mercy and compassion, our efforts and prayers for the
cause of the beatification of Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, may be
blessed with cases for healing. That God grant wholeness to those who
call in the name of the Lord through the intercession of Mother Ignacia.
May her prayers and intercession, obtain for us the favors we ask for,
particularly, that of remaining ever faithful to your love and service.

Abstraction:
A. Introduction
Globalization is a free movement of goods, services, and people across the world in a
seamless and integrated manner. In other words, when countries that were hither to closed to trade
and foreign investment open-up their economies and go global, the result is an increasing
disconnectedness and integration of the economies of the world. Globalization represents an
unavoidable phenomenon in the history of mankind, which is making the world smaller and smaller
by increasing the exchange of goods, services, information, knowledge and cultures between
different countries. Globalization is a process that has change a lot in our everyday lives. This
multidimensional and contradictory process brings to life the hopes and achievements that life can
bring to it. The rush for greater competition is one of the main objectives of globalization. Such a

thing can only be reached with the market liberalization, economic integration and technology
development. It is important for us to benefit from globalization.
B. Overview of Globalization
Globalization involves:
A stretching social, political, and economic activities across political frontiers.
C. Metaphors of Globalization
a. Solidity refers to barriers that prevents or make difficult the movement of things.
Furthermore, solids can either be natural or manmade.
b. Liquidity, as a state of matter, takes the shape of its container. Moreover, liquids are not
fixed. Therefore, refers to the increasing ease of movement of people, things, informations,
and places in the contemporary world.
D. Defining Globalization
The perspective of the person who defines globalization shapes its definition.
Globalization is a reality.

Abstraction:
In 1820, the world was made up of 125 sovereign states. By the end of the 1 st wave of globalization
in 1914, the number of countries had fallen to 54, less than half of the initial level. The interwar
period witnessed a reversal of these trends: trade collapsed and the number of sovereign states rose
to 76 by 1949. Until then, political and economic integration had proceeded together. Yet, the end of
World War II marks the beginning of a new era. The second wave of globalization that started after
1950 has led trade between nations to flourish to levels never seen before. But this time the process
of economic integration was accompanied by different changes in the world political structure. On
the other hand, the number of countries has risen to a record high more than 190, suggesting that
more trade is now accompanied by political fragmentation. On the other hand, however, there has
been proliferation and growth of international treaties and unions aimed especially at fostering
economic integration, such as the WTO and the European Union.
The origins of a global economy can be traced to the expansion of long-distance trade during the
period of 1450-1640, which Wallerstein (1979) has labeled the “long sixteenth century.” From the
fifteenth century onward, a number of chartered trading companies emerged in Europe , such as
the East India Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company, which created vast international trading
empires. Although their activities were worldwide in scope, their main purpose was trade and
A.Y. 2021-
BEED/BSED/BSBA/BSHM GE 102/104- CONTEMPORARY WORLD Page 13 of 19
2022
exchange, rather than production. The development of a world trading system over a period of
several centuries helped to create the tripartite structure of core, semi-peripheral, and peripheral
economic areas. According to world system theory, the upward or downhill mobility of nations in the
core, semi-periphery, and periphery is determined by a country’s mode of incorporation in the
capitalist world-economy, and these shifts can only be accurately portrayed by an in-depth analysis
of the cycles of capitalist accumulation in the “longue duree” of history.
B. Market Integration
Market Integration is a term used to identify a phenomenon in which markets of goods and services
are related to one another being to experience similar patterns of increase or decrease in terms of
the prices of those products. The term can also refer to circumstances in which the prices of related
goods and services sold in a defined geographical location also begin to move in some sort of similar
pattern to one another. It occurs when prices among different locations or related goods follow
similar patterns over a long period of time. Group of prices time and again move proportionally to
one another and when its relation is very clear among different markets, these markets are said to
be integrated. Thus, market integration is an indicator that explains how much different market are
related to each other.
Market Integration may occur in any type of related market. With stock market integration, similar
trends in trading prices for assets related to a given industry may found in two or more markets
around the world. In a like manner, market integration may occur when lending rates in several
different markets begin to move in tandem with one another. In some cases, a market integration
within a nation may involve the emergence of similar patterns within the capital, stocks, and financial
markets, with those trends coming together to exert a profound influence on the economy of that
nation.
The modern world system is now a global economy with a global political system (the modern
interstate system), which refers to the relationship between different state union. It also includes all
the cultural aspects and interaction networks of the human population. A hegemon is a core state
that has significantly greater amount of economic power than any other state, and that takes on the
political role of system leader.
The world system theory is a macro-scale approach to analyzing the world history of mankind and
social changes in different countries. The theory refers to the division of labor, be it inter-regionally
and transnationally. Currently, the theory divides the world into the core, semi-peripheral and
periphery countries. World systems are whole systems of interacting with one another in important
ways-interactions are two-way, necessary, structured, regularized, and reproductive.
a. Core nations- appear to be powerful, wealthy and highly independent of outside control.
b. Semi-peripheral Nations- these regions have a less developed economy and are not dominant
in the international trade.
c. Peripheral Nations- these are the nations that are least economically developed.
The emerging field of global governance has produced a number of breakthroughs, as well as
failures, aimed at managing global problems through the voluntary and ad hoc cooperation of a
diverse range of international actors.
