MUSIC 8 – First Quarter

MUSIC OF SOUTHEAST ASIA


(WEEK 3-4/Q1)

Brief Introduction:
Music of Southeast Asia usually accompanies ceremonial music of the royal
courts and temples. Instrumental and vocal music is used extensively in dance,
theatre and in different ceremonies. Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand have
instruments that are almost similar on how they are being played or made of.

Learning Competencies
1.Explores ways of producing sounds on a variety of sources that would stimulate
instruments being studied.
2. Improvises simple accompaniment to selected Southeast Asian Music.

Objectives:
1. Identify the different musical instruments of Thailand, Indonesia and
Cambodia.
2. Analyze how musical instrument performed or played.
3.Improvise simple rhythmic/harmonic accompaniments to selected Southeast
Asian music.

Activity 1. “Do You Remember Me?”


Look at each picture below and identify how it is played. Try to remember the
Hornbostel-Sachs classification of instruments that you have learned in Grade 7. Is it
an aerophone, chordophone, idiophone or membranophone? Write your answers on

Were you able to guess their sounds and how they are

Our discussion will focus on the instrumental
music of Southeast Asian countries particularly in
Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS FROM SOUTHEAST ASIA


CAMBODIA

Pinpeat - this orchestra consists of approximately five to six instruments,


mostly percussion. It mainly consisting of the following instruments:

1. SAMPHOR - a double-headed drum played 2. ONEAT – xylophones (idiophone


with hands (membranophone)

3. CHHING – finger cymbals 4. SKORTHOM - two big drums similar to
(idiophone) Japanese (membranophone)

INDONESIA
Gamelan Instruments - contains mainly by bronze percussion
instruments, augmented by other percussion instruments, strings, and
flute.

THAILAND

Thailand musical instruments are inspired from the Indian and Indonesian
strings and gong-chimes. Thailand has three primary instrumental ensemble that
are similar to the other ensembles in Southeast Asia.

ACTIVITY 2. “My Musical Ensemble’’

Music has a big role in every culture and tradition


whereas musical ensembles is prevalent in Southeast Asian
countries. In this activity assume that you are about to
conduct your own musical ensemble presenting Southeast
Asian musical instruments that you have studied earlier
Illustrate the position and groupings of the musica
instruments in your own ensemble. Use the space provided
for your illustration.

ACTIVITY 3. “Put Me in the Table”


Using the table below, classify the musical instruments according to
Hornbostel Sach (Aerophone, Membranophone, Chordophone, Idiophone). Analyze
on how it is being played to produced sound. (striked with a mallet, tapped by hands,
strummed or plucked and blowed by air)

Direction: Write “South” if the musical instrument is from Cambodia, “East” if it

Let’s CREATE

Activity 5. “Sing and Play with Me”


Direction: Sing the song Leron -leron Sinta and accompany it using
improvised instruments. You may use glass soda bottles, spoon/pork or
anything that is available in your house that can produce sounds. Record
your performance using your cellphone or any gadgets available and submit
it through messenger, facebook or e - mail.

Activity 6. “MY Scrapbook”

Direction: Make a scrapbook of Southeast Asianmusical instruments.


Carefully organize the pictures and include a brief description about each
instrument. Please refer to the assessment rubric for criteria.
