Module 1-Human Development: Meaning, Concepts and Approaches

This document provides an overview of human development and distinguishes two approaches: the traditional development perspective and lifespan development perspective. It defines human development as a pattern of change from conception through the lifespan that can be positive or negative. Some major principles of development discussed are that it follows relatively orderly patterns, rates and outcomes can vary, it occurs gradually over time, and involves integrated biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional processes.

Subject : Prof Ed 1 - Child and Adolescent Learners and Learning Development

Module Title : Human Development : Meaning, Concepts and Approaches
Learning Outcomes : 1. Draw some principles of human development
2. distinguish the two approaches to human development

CONCEPTS :

Human Development is the pattern of movement or change that begins at conception and continues
through the life span. It includes growth and decline , meaning, development can either be positive or
negative.

Some major principles of human development:

1. Development is relatively orderly. An individual follows a certain pattern of development. A
child will learn to sit, crawl, then walk before they can run. There are two patterns:
Proximodistal pattern – the muscular control of the trunk and arms comes earlier as
compared
to the hands and fingers.
Cephalocaudal pattern – during infancy, the greatest growth always occurs at the top –
the head – with physical growth is size, weight and future differentiation gradually
working its way down from top to bottom ( neck, shoulders, middle trunk, etc. )
2. While the pattern of development is likely to be similar, the outcomes of developmental
processes and the rate of development are likely to vary among individuals. We can expect
individual differences in developmental characteristics and variation in the ages due to heredity
and environment.

3. Development takes place gradually. It takes months and years to undergo changes that result
in the display of developmental characteristics.

4. Development as a process is complex because it is the product of biological, cognitive and

socio-emotional processes .
Biological processes involve changes in the individual’s physical nature – height and
weight, brain, hormonal changes when they reach the age of puberty.
Cognitive processes involve changes in the individual’s thoughts, intelligence and
language.
Socio-emotional processes include changes in the individual’s relationships with other
people, changes in emotions, and changes in personality.
These biological, cognitive and socio-emotional processes are inextricably
intertwined. The effect of one process on a person’s development is not isolated from
other processes.

Two Approaches to Human Development

A. Traditional development perspective s that individuals will show extensive change from birth to
adolescence, little or no change in adulthood and decline in late old age.
B. Life –span development perspective states that even in adulthood, developmental change
takes place
as it does during childhood.

Characteristics of the life-span perspective:

1. Development is life-long. It does not end in adulthood. No developmental stage dominates

development.
2. Development is multidimensional. Development consists of biological, cognitive and socio-
emotional dimensions.
3. Development is plastic. Development is possible throughout the life-span.
4. Development is contextual . Individuals are changing beings in a changing world.
5. Development involves growth, maintenance, and regulation. These are the three goals of
human development which vary among developmental stages.

EXERCISES: A. Write TRUE before the number if the statement is correct and FALSE , if wrong. If your
answer
Is false, explain why.
_______ 1. Development is a pattern of change.
_______ 2. From both traditional and life-span perspectives, development is lifelong.
_______ 3. Development is either growth or decline.
_______ 4. Development is unpredictable .
_______ 5. The effect of biological process on development is isolated from the effect of
cognitive
and socio-emotional
_______ 6. Development is predictable because it follows an orderly process.
_______ 7. In the development process , there are things that hold true to all people.

B . Construct a Venn diagram of the biological, cognitive and socio-emotional processes of

development
C. Differentiate the traditional development perspective and the lifespan development
perspective.
D. “ Growth is an evidence of life. “ What does this mean?
E. Research and read a research on human development. Give an abstract of the research by
stating the :
1. Problem
2. Methods
3. Findings
4. Conclusions
