1) If * is the operation defined on 𝑆 = 𝑄 × 𝑄, the set of ordered pairs of rational numbers and
given by (𝑎, 𝑏) ∗ (𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑎𝑥, 𝑎𝑦 + 𝑏),
(a) Find if (𝑆, ∗) is a semigroup. Is it commutative?
(b) Find the identity element of 𝑆.
(c) Which elements, if any, have inverses and what are they?

2) (a) Prove that the set {0, 1, 2, 3, 4 } is a finite abelian group of order 5 under addition modulo 5 as
composition.
(b) Prove that the set { 1, 3, 7, 9 } is an abelian group under multiplication modulo 10.
(c) Show that the set of all polynomials in 𝑥 under the operation of addition is a group.

3) Show that the set of 2 × 2 matrices in (a), (c), (d) from groups under matrix multiplication and
the set in (b) forms a group under matrix addition. Which of them are abelian group?

(b) Suppose that 𝐺 is a cyclic group such that 𝑂𝑟𝑑(𝐺) = 48. How many subgroups does 𝐺
have?
8 Show that the set { 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑖 ∈ 𝐶 | 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 = 1} is a subgroup of (𝐶, ∙) where ∙ is the
multiplication operation of complex numbers.
9 Simplify the following with the help of Boolean algebra Rules:
(i) (𝑋 + 𝑌)(𝑋 + 𝑌̅)(𝑋̅ + 𝑍) (ii) 𝑋𝑌𝑍̅ + 𝑋𝑌̅𝑍 + 𝑋𝑌𝑍̅
10 Prepare a truth table for the following Boolean expression:
