Sculpture is the art of carving or modeling three-dimensional forms, typically from stone or metal but also from wood, clay, or other materials. There are two main types: relief sculpture that is done on a flat surface, and free-standing sculpture that can be viewed from all sides. Sculptures serve religious, commemorative, and artistic functions. Materials commonly used include marble, bronze, wood, ivory, clay, and in the Philippines, bamboo and coral. Sculpting techniques include subtractive methods like carving and additive methods like assembling pieces. Famous sculptors throughout history have used these various materials and methods to create iconic and meaningful works of art.
