Angela DC. Revereza BPED2: 1. Was The Parent's Decision Correct?

The document discusses the case of "Baby Jane Doe" who was born with multiple defects including spina bifida and hydrocephalus. There were two surgeons, Dr. Newman and Dr. Keuskamp, who disagreed on whether Jane should have surgery - Dr. Newman believed surgery would be pointless while Dr. Keuskamp advocated for immediate surgery. The parents ultimately agreed to have fluid drained from Jane's brain but refused further major surgery. As the parents, the dilemma would be deciding whether to continue with surgery or not, considering Jane's condition and quality of life. The two surgeons had opposing views that impacted the parents' decision making.

Week 10 Case Analysis on the topic Development of moral character: Case Ana on jane Doe

1. Was the parent’s decision correct?

-       Yes, for me it is right that they decided to accept Dr. Newman’s recommendation and
refused permission for surgery that was given by Dr. Keuskamp. Through the
scenario, it was given that the case of the baby Jane is not easy because of multiple
defects on her body, if she goes to the surgeon, if possible, to make her feel more
difficult. Like Dr. Newman’s said that the decision made by the parents would be
unkind because they do not let have the surgery performed on this child but on the
basis of the combination that are present on baby jane, she is not likely to ever
achieve any meaningful interaction with her environment.  So, for the sake of baby
Jane, I guess parent’s decision would be correct and I also believe that parent knows
the best so I would agree with them.

2. What are the Facts of the Baby Jane Doe Case?

-  In the case that is given, there are stated facts about the case of baby jane.   First, she
was diagnosed having multiple defects including Spina Bifida. It is A broken and
protruding spine, Hydrocephalus and Microcephaly (it is an abnormally small head).
The professionals suggest that the baby can undergo surgery but it will not make any
change to her which made another doctor to let her remain at her state. Baby Jane
Doe's Case had gained attention and sympathies which brought arguments. In fact,
there are two surgeons; Dr. Newman’s and Dr. Keuskamp who have opposite beliefs
toward the case. But at the end of the day, only the removal of fluid from Baby Jane
Doe's brain was performed and nothing followed. The Parents did eventually agree to
the use of a shunt to remove the excess fluid from the child’s brain. but the major
surgery, for the spina bifida, was not performed.

3. If you were the parents (the moral agents) What was your dilemma?

-   If I were the parents, I honestly feel scared and hopeless because of my baby's case
but if it were needed, I would still take a risk even if it hard. If I were her parents,
the dilemma is you need to choose whether to continue the said surgery or not. I
would consult and ask for doctors and professionals that would help my child. I will
do everything to save her life. But if I can see that she feels sick of her situation. If
she cannot fight her own battle, I would rather choose her peace than making the
situation complicated. I know that she can be good in God’s place and I will take it
even if it is hurt. I know that parents should take care and fight for their child but for
me it is also a kind of love and sacrifice. Instead of making the situation hard, you
choose the peace where she cannot feel any more pain.

4.    Who are the two other stakeholders contesting the parent’s decision?

-   There are two stakeholders that affect the decision making of the parents. They are
both pediatric surgeons, Dr. Newman’s and Dr. Keuskamp.

What was the value-behind position?

-  I guess the value-behind position was to help in decision making. Doctors give their
sides towards the case of baby jane. Both of them have suggested the sake of the
baby. Dr. George Newman believed that surgery would be pointless because the baby
could never have a meaningful human and opposite of the beliefs of Dr. Arjen
Keuskamp, for him the baby’s condition was not hopeless and it advocated
immediate surgery.

 What would be your decision?

-        Honestly, I don’t know how to react or decide because it is one of those hard
decisions that anyone can make. We know that life is sacred and it is a blessing from
above. They have different beliefs and principles that can affect them in making
decisions. For me, I should Think carefully before I act. I can Consult and do
research if it is needed so that it would easy and can help me in deciding such things
