Glenair Termination Procedure

For Glenair 181-001 and 181-002 Series Termini

1.0 SCOPE
The following procedure is for termination of Glenair Fiber Optic Termini size 16, M29504/04 & 05 style, MIL-DTL-38999 series III.

2.0 SAFETY NOTICE

Warning: Extreme care should be taken when handling optical fiber to avoid penetration of skin. Avoid eye contact with illuminated laser light
which can cause eye damage.
3.0 TERMINATION/ASSEMBLY TOOLS AND CONSUMABLES
Ruler (6” Scale) Buffer striper Dispensing Needle Glass Polishing Plate Cable Jacket Cutter
Microscope (200X) Isopropyl Alcohol Heat Gun Polishing Pad and Film Mechanical Stripper
Epoxy Curing Fixture Compressed Air Bundle Light Source Swabs
Kevlar Shear Syringe Cleaving Tool Razor Blade or Exacto Knife Wipes
Insertion/Removal Tool P/N 809-131 (M81969/14-03) Polishing Tool (182-001S for socket terminus, 182-001P for pin terminus)

4.0 CABLE PREPARATION/TERMINATION

4.1 Verify cable to ensure correct type.
4.2 Select appropriate terminus: A) P/N 181-002-XXX →Terminus, Pin or B) P/N 181-001-XXX →Terminus, Socket
4.3 Carefully remove cover and alignment sleeve from socket terminus prior to termination.
4.4 Slide shrink tubing (supplied with terminus) onto cable.
4.5 Strip cable to the dimensions in inches indicated in figure 1.

4.6 Wipe off the bare fiber with Isopropyl Alcohol immediately after stripping.
Warning: Uncoated fiber degrades when exposed to air. Termination must be done within 10 minutes.
4.7 Prepare epoxy according to manufacturer’s instruction. (See step 6 for list of recommended epoxies)
4.8 Fill syringe with epoxy and eliminate all air bubbles.
4.9 Insert syringe into rear of terminus and fill ferrule with epoxy until a small bead of epoxy is at the tip of the ferrule. Retract the syringe while
filling.
4.10 FIBER INSERTION
4.10.1 Fold back strength members and distribute them evenly over outer jacket of cable.
4.10.2 Carefully insert stripped fiber into terminus until the cable jacket bottoms against the back of the terminus body.
4.10.3 Wipe off any excess epoxy from the rear of the terminus upon insertion of the fiber/cable.
4.10.4 Bare fiber should stick out of the front of terminus approximately 0.17”. See figure 2.
4.10.5 Be sure that the exterior surfaces of termini are free of epoxy.
4.10.6 Distribute strength members evenly around the circumference of the rear body.
4.10.7 Slide shrink tubing to base of terminus shoulder, capturing the strength member
4.10.8 Using a heat gun, apply heat until shrink tubing fits snuggly. Do not overheat.
Warning: overheating can cause damage to cable

5.0 EPOXY CURING
5.1 Carefully position terminated fiber into cavity of oven curing block.
Warning: Be careful not to break exposed fiber.

6.0 EPOXIES AND ASSOCIATED CURING PROCEDURES/SCHEDULES

There is variety of epoxy adhesives which may be used depending on the application. Ensure that the cable’s temperature rating is compatible
with curing temperature. Only two different adhesives are listed in this procedure.
6.1 M24792-A per MIL-PRF-24792 or equivalent (FOCI Angstrom Bond AB-9112 or Tra-Con TRA-BOND F112)
Heat cure 1 hour @ 65°C (or 24 hours air cure).
6.2 EPO-TEK 353ND Heat cure 2 hours @80°C
6.3 EPO-TEK 353ND (for High Temperature applications). Ramped cure scheduled: High Temp. Fiber Only. (in succession)
1) 30 minutes @ 80°C
2) 30 minutes @ 100°C
3) 10 minutes @ 150°C

7.0 FIBER SCRIBING

7.1 Hold Terminus with fiber pointed straight up and lightly score fiber approximately .01” above ceramic.
7.2 Gently move the blade across fiber to scribe glass using fiber scribe.
7.3 Grasp fiber and pull gently upward until fiber breaks.
7.4 Carefully discard piece of fiber.

8.0 POLISHING PROCEDURE

Note: Clean polishing film, tool, and tip of terminus using distilled water after each step.
Note: Dry all parts using wipes or compressed air.
8.1 Spray a fine mist of distilled water onto the polishing pad.
8.2 Place the polishing film onto the polishing pad.
8.3 Insert terminus into polishing tool.
8.4 Polish terminus in small figure “8” motion per polishing procedure listed in table 1.
8.5 Visually inspect the terminus tip using microscope to prevent over polishing after each polishing step.
8.6 Use light pressure through each polishing step.

Table 1, Polishing Procedure for Domed PC Polish

Polish Step Paper Grit Size # of figure 8’s Hand Pressure Polishing Surface Lubricant
1 Polish on Pad
st 3µ Silicon Carbide 15 - 20 Light 90 Durometer Pad Dry
2nd Polish on Pad 3µ Diamond 10 Light 90 Durometer Pad Distilled Water
3rd Polish on Pad 1µ Diamond 10 Light 90 Durometer Pad Distilled Water
4th Polish on Pad 0.5µ Diamond 5 Light 90 Durometer Pad Distilled Water
5th Polish on Pad Ultra-Fine 3 Light 90 Durometer Pad Distilled Water

9.0 WORKMANSHIP INSPECTION

After completing the final polishing step, the core must be free of epoxy, scratches, pits, and cracks.
Warning: Do not backlight fiber when inspecting for scratches.

10.0 SOCKET TERMINUS ALIGNMENT SLEEVE AND PROTECTIVE COVER INSTALLATION

10.1 Carefully slide alignment sleeve onto terminus ferrule until seated, see figure 4.
10.2 Apply “Loctite 222” sparingly on three full threads of the socket terminus. Take care not to place loctite on any other surface of the terminus.
10.3 Thread the protective cover onto the end of the socket terminus until it is fully seated. No gaps should be present between the cover and
shoulder, see figure 4.
10.4 Install dust cover (sold separately) to protect the optical end face.
