The study aims to answer the following:

1) What is the demographic profile of Grade 10 students in terms of:

b) Age

2) What is the difference between the male and female when it comes to taking

a selfie?

3) What is the frequency level of taking up a selfie of a Grade 10 student?

b) Acute

c) Chronic

4) What are the perceived signs that a student being addicted in social media in

terms of:

a) Hours spent

b) Satisfaction

5) Is there any significant relationship between selfie syndrome and social media

addiction of Grade 10 students?

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

This chapter discusses the result of the study. The researcher presents the

gathered data to show the presentation, interpretation and analysis in order to

formulate conclusion and recommendation.

In data presentation table and various graphs will be utilize in accordance with

the needs of the study. The second part of this chapter is the interpretation of the

data which gives the explanations about the data collected. The last part of this

chapter is the Analysis of Data wherein Interpretation and data analysis is very

essential as stated by Tania (2014), “It is the process of assigning meaning to the

collected information and determining the conclusions, significance, and

implications of the findings”.

Table 1. shows the results of the frequency distribution and the percentage of

the demographic profile of Grade 10 students with the total respondents of 80 in

terms of sex, female and male. Wherein both got 40 respondents with the total

number of 80 students. Also, in the percentage both got 50% with the overall of

100%. A longitudinal survey that was conducted by Yu and Shek (2013) in Hong

Kong reported prevalence rate of Internet addiction as high as 26.7% among

high school students whether it is male or female and were able to vocalize at

least one positive impacts such as browsing to social media sites right after they

wake up from sleep or uploading and in liking selfies.

Table 1.1. shows the results of the frequency distribution and the percentage of

the demographic profile of Grade 10 students with the total respondents of 80 in

terms of age. Ages 15 years old has the respondents of 36 that got 45%. Next,

the students whose ages 16 years old with the total of 39 that has the percentage

of 49%. Lastly, students ages 17 years old that only got 5 that has 6%. The

majority age of the some respondents are ages 16 years old. With an overall total

frequency of 80 with the percentage of 100. In the study of Lenhart (2010)

reported that gathered the responses of the selected students in LaSalle College

Antipolo with age ranging from 16-19 years old. Young adults tend to be active in

social media and selfie-taking. In taking selfies, adolescents at this age range

were more likely to take photos without even posting it.

Table 2. shows the computed weighted mean and the verbal interval of the

differences between the male and female when it comes to taking a selfie. The

male respondents had a weighted mean of 2.83 where some of them does not like

to take selfies because of its verbal interval is disagree. Next was the female

respondents who has a weighted mean of 3.767147 where its verbal interval is

neither agree or disagree. Therefore, the majority among male and female when it

comes to taking a selfie are the female. Based on Selfiecity (2014), a project that

tracks selfies revealed that in New York, 23-year-old females take the most selfies

and 62 percent of selfies are taken by women. This shows that females take

selfies continuously even in “boring” places, while a man can go to the moon and

take only a few photos. Reflecting that selfies are a mirror for women through

which they reflect themselves and reflect their beauty. Millennial women use

selfies to portray a specific image as a reflection of their life, even if it is not

genuine.

Table 3. shows the different frequency level of Grade 10 students when taking

up a selfie. The Borderline level has the lower weighted mean of 31.5 which

means that students whose taking selfies were not able to post to on social

media. Next is acute level that has a weighted mean of 55.25714286 where

students posting their selfies a day and the chronic level with the weighted mean

of 76.27906977 whereas, the majority level where most of the respondents are

experiencing an uncontrollable urge to take and post photos a day. As Kaur, S., &

Vig, D. (2016) pointed out in their findings where their respondents are the Indian

students as participants in their research showed that those with chronic selfitis

were more likely to be motivated to take selfies due to attention-seeking,

environmental enhancement and social competition. The results suggest that

people with chronic levels of selfitis are seeking to fit in with those around them,

and may display symptoms similar to other potentially addictive behaviors.

Table 4. shows the frequency distribution and its percentage of the perceived

signs of a student being addicted in social media in terms of hours spent. Both of

the time between 30-60 minutes and 1-2 hours has got the respondents of 12

with a percentage of 15. Some of the respondents answered 3-4 hours with a

frequency of 24 and a percent of 30. Lastly, 6 hours and above where students

spent in using social media with a frequency of 32 and a percentage of 40. With

the overall total frequency of 80 and with a percentage of 100. Wherein most of

the respondents spending their time in about 6 hours and above in using social

media. The latest Digital 2019 report, from Hootsuite and We Are Social, shows

that people are spending on average of 6 hours and 42 minutes online each day.

Half of that is spent on mobile devices. Also, it shows a modest decrease from

the previous year, which showed 6 hours and 49 minutes of usage.

Table 4.1. shows the computed weighted mean and its verbal interval of the

perceived signs of a student being addicted in social media in terms of

satisfaction where distinct characteristics are being shown. All participants have

a different perception when it comes to satisfaction. It can be seen that salience

has a weighted mean of 4.04375 which means that the respondent uses the

Internet as a form of mental escape from distributing thoughts and may feel that

life without the Internet would be boring, empty, or joyless. The weighted mean

that has 4.094620253 is excessive use where some of the respondents engages

in excessive online behavior and compulsive usage, and is intermittently unable

to control time online that he or she hides from others. The computed weighted

mean in neglect work is 3.4625, job or school performance and productivity are

most likely compromised due to the amount of time spent online and the

respondent may become defensive or secretive about the time spent online. The

corrected mean in anticipation is 4.0125 indicates that the respondent most likely

thinks about being online when not at the computer and feels compelled to use

the Internet when offline. Next is the weighted mean in lack of control,

3.816666667 that has trouble managing his or her online time and lastly neglect

social life that most likely utilizes online relationships to cope with situational

problems that has a weighted mean of 3.75. However, the majority perceived

signs in terms of satisfaction is the excessive use. Based on the three models of

Xu and Tan (2012), it suggests that the transition from normal to problematic

social networking use or the excessive use occurs when social networking is

viewed by the individual as an important (or even exclusive) mechanism to

relieve stress, loneliness, or depression .

Table 5. shows the results of the significant relationship of selfie syndrome and

social media addiction of grade 10 students. The weighted mean of selfie

syndrome has 3.29875 while in social media addiction has 3.876065. To get its

correlation the two variables are computed by the use of Pearson r and tabular

correlation. By using the said formula the outcome result is 0.701968 which

means that the relationship of the two is moderate correlation. If the value lies

between ± 0.30 and ± 0.49, then it is said to be a moderate or medium

correlation. Katz & Crocker (2015) indicates that social media platforms and

recently, ‘selfies’ have become fully incorporated into young people’s lives. As

the selfitis researchers (2014) describe, “People suffering from the disorder took

selfies in an attempt to increase their self-confidence, seek attention, improve

their mood, and connect with the environment around them (to create a record of

memories), increase their conformity with the social group around them, and to

be socially competitive.” Selfies allow the opportunity for instant gratification in

the form of positive feedback, shares and likes, something which has only been

made possible with the rise of social media. Also, Pounders, K., et.al. (2016)

claimed that selfie-postings provide people with a channel to manage others’

impressions of them, creating and boosting their self-esteem, which can support

their happiness and physical attractiveness.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of the research study undertaken, the

conclusions drawn and the recommendations made as outgrowth of this study.

Wherein the main purpose of the study is to determine the relationship of selfie

syndrome and in social media addiction of Grade 10 students. Its reasons and

perceived signs.

Summary of Findings

The findings of the study are as follow:

1. Demographic profile of Grade 10 students in terms of:

1.1 Sex

The total respondents of grade 10 students is 80 in terms of sex, female and

male. Wherein both got 40 respondents with the total number of 80 students.

Also, in the percentage both got 50% with the overall of 100%.

There are different age in students in Grade 10 some are ages 15 years old

that had the respondents of 36 that got 45%. Next is the 16 years old where it is

the majority age with the total of 39 that has the percentage of 49%. Lastly,

students ages 17 years old that only got 5 that has 6%.

2. Difference between male and female when it comes to taking a selfie

Students who likes to take more selfies are the females that had the

weighted mean of 3.767147 wherein all of the participants are resulting into

taking many selfies of themselves whether they like to take one or not than the

males where some of them does not like to take selfies or has the least number

of shots when it comes to taking up a selfie in a day that has a weighted mean of

2.83.

3. Frequency level of taking up a selfie

The reason why many of the Grade 10 students are addicted in taking up a

selfie is that they are in a chronic level with an outstanding weighted mean of

76.27906977 which means that they are experiencing an uncontrollable urge to

take and post up to six photos a day. Second one is the acute level that has a

weighted mean of 55.25714286 meaning that students post their selfies up to

three a day. Lastly the borderline level with a weighted mean of 31.5 wherein

some students only took up to three selfies but not posting it.

4. Perceived signs that a student being addicted in social media in terms of:

4.1 Hours Spent

The results of the students who took the survey where the majority hours

spent is 6 hours and above that has 40% with 32 respondents, they are the ones

who spent more in using social media. Followed by ranges 3 – 4 hours that has a

percentage of 30 wherein 24 respondents answered it. But the other 12 students

only spent 1 – 2 hours or 30 – 60 minutes where both time got 15%.

4.2 Satisfaction

Each participants have a different perception when it comes to satisfaction in

using social media. The weighted mean of salience is 4.04375 which means that

the respondent uses the Internet as a form of mental escape. The computed

weighted mean in neglect work is 3.4625 where productivity are most likely

compromised due to the amount of time spent online. In anticipation it has

4.0125 indicates that the respondent most likely thinks about being online. Next

is lack of control where the weighted mean is 3.816666667 that has trouble

managing his time online and lastly neglect social life that most likely utilizes

online relationships to cope with situational problems that has a weighted mean

of 3.75. However, the highest weighted mean among the six is 4.094620253 that

is excessive use meaning students are engage in excessive online behavior and

compulsive usage.

5. Significant relationship between selfie syndrome and social media

addiction

The selfie syndrome and social media addiction has a moderate correlation

wherein the weighted mean of selfie syndrome is 3.29875 while 3.876065 in

social media addiction. The two variables are computed by the use of Pearson r

and tabular correlation to get its relationship. By using the said formula the

outcome result is 0.701968.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn;

1. Some of the students in Grade 10 neither male or female ages 16 years old

meaning that they are more prone and can be easily attached when it comes to

being addicted in social media and in taking selfies.

2. Female is the most addicted when it comes in taking a selfie because they

have more confidence when showing their face and compare to male most of

them are shy to show their own face or neither they like to take selfies or not.

3. Half of the students are already experiencing or having a psychological illness

or the so-called selfie syndrome where they had an uncontrollable urge to post

their picture on social media to have many likes or to get others attention so they

post everyday to fit in with those around them.

4. The main reason a student being addicted in social media is because of

excessive use on it where they are unable to control their time online spending 6

hours and above because of its good features and quality offers.

5. There is a significant relationship between selfie syndrome and social media

addiction. Therefore, posting a selfie in social media provides people a channel

to receive a positive feedback from their social friends by liking it to boost their

confidence, which can support happiness and physical attractiveness. Also, it

can lead a student to be even more addicted in social media because of posting

his/her photos every day.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings and conclusions drawn, the following

recommendations are suggested:

1. Building willpower for those students who are under 16 years old that allows

them to deliberately ignore distractions like being addicted in social media and

taking selfies while staying focused on the task at hand.

2. Have a selfie time-out, since taking a selfie is everyone’s like it should be

controlled in every minute or have a break especially women to avoid being

insecure in her physical looks and conduct a further research why men isn’t

interested or only taking a least selfie of their selves and if the amount of selfie

they are taking will change as time goes by in the future.

3. The school must invite a psychologist and had a seminar for the students and

for those who already experienced having a selfie syndrome to have a

knowledge about its causes and effects to lessen their selfie level in to

borderline.

4. Organize a fun activity like engaging in any sports for the students to minimize

their social media presence and usage and sometimes parents should also

intervene in their son’s activity in using social media.

5. Conduct a seminar for the students to be aware about the disadvantages of

posting selfies in social media can be causing a person to become anxious about

his/herself and for them to know that posting selfies can be a factor in being

addicted in social media.

Recommendations

In the light of the findings and conclusions drawn, the following

recommendations are suggested:

1. practice to building willpower(self-control) is the best method Students

especially those who are under 16 years old must pay their attention in different

things because of the negative impact of social media and in taking too much

selfies in their life.

2. Since taking a selfie is everyone’s like it should be controlled in every minute

especially women to avoid being insecure in her physical looks and for the future

researchers to have a further research why men isn’t interested or only taking a

least selfie of their selves.

3. Students should lessen taking too much selfies to avoid having a

psychological illness or the so-called selfie syndrome. Also, the researchers

recommend to try putting down their phones once a week and feel or enjoy the

moment where they are more free and powerful as the best solution to decrease

their frequency level in borderline.

4. Some students like to spend more time in social media therefore the

researchers recommend that they have to minimize their social media presence

and usage and sometimes parents should also intervene in their son’s activity in

using social media.

5. Users especially the students must be aware about the disadvantages of

posting selfies in social media can be because it has also a negative effect like

being bashed by others or cyberbullying and will cause a person to become

anxious about his/herself. Try to balance valuing looking good online to maintain

a healthy view of yourself.
