OFFERING & RESPONDING HELP

A. OFFERING A HELP

When you want to offer a help to other people, here are some expressions you can use:

1. What can I do for you?  a polite way to offer a help / service.

2. May I … (do something)?  a very formal way of offering help.
Examples:
 May I help you?
 May I carry your bag?
 May I open the window?
3. Would you like me to … (do something)?  a formal and kind way to express yourself.
Examples:
 Would you like me to open the window?
 Would you like me to bring you a drink?
4. Can I … (do something)?  somewhat less formally while still being kind. You can use it
with friends as well as strangers.
Examples:
 Can I bring you a dessert?
 Can I give you a lift?
 Do you want me to make you a cup of coffee?
5. Do you want me to … (do something)?  less formal than the previous forms. It is used
when you are not completely sure of the answer your offer will receive.
Examples:
 Do you want me to go for you?
 Do you want me to come to pick you up?
6. Shall I … (do something)?  This verb does not have very widespread use, especially in
the United States. It is only used for first person singular (I) and plural (we). It is an
encouraging way to express your wish to help someone.
Examples:
 Shall I turn off the radio?
 Shall I help you with your homework?
7. I’d be happy to … (do something)  a very formal way of offering your help. It is often
used in the workplace or between people who do not know each other well.
Examples:

 I’d be happy to go with you.
8. I can … (do something)  a kind way to offer help to someone
Examples:
 I can write this email for you.
 I can go buy some coffee if you want.
9. Let me … (do something)  informal way of offering help to someone.
Examples:
 Let me help you with your jacket.
 Let me find out if it’s true.
10. I will … (do something)  informal. Use it with people who you know well and who will
