Order of Operations: You Have Added, Subtracted, Multiplied, or Divided With Whole Numbers

This document provides a lesson on order of operations when performing calculations with multiple operations. It explains that the order affects the result and establishes the standard order as: 1) operations in brackets, 2) multiplication and division from left to right, 3) addition and subtraction from left to right. Examples demonstrate getting different answers depending on order. Students are asked to solve expressions using correct order of operations.

Order of Operations

You have added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided with whole numbers.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide are operations.

In this lesson, you will perform calculations using more than one operation.

To win a contest, Harry’s dad must answer this skill-testing question:

9 3 ! 6 " 4 # _____

➤ Find the answer in as many ways as you can.

➤ Record the strategy you use for each method.
➤ The correct answer is 23.
Which strategy gives this answer?

Show and Share

Share your work with another student.
Discuss how to rewrite the question so the only possible answer is 23.

When you solve a problem that uses more than one operation,
the answer depends on the order in which you perform the operations.

Solve the expression: 3 6 ! 4

If you add first, you get: 9 ! 4 # 36 An expression is a
mathematical statement
If you multiply first, you get: 3 24 # 27 with numbers and operations.
When we calculate the answer,
To avoid getting two answers, there is a rule we solve the expression.
that multiplication is done before addition.
So, 3 6!4#3 24 # 27, which is the correct answer

54 LESSON FOCUS Use the correct order of operations.

We use brackets if we want certain operations carried out first.
To make sure everyone gets the same answer when solving
an expression, we use this order of operations:

• Do the operations in brackets.

• Multiply and divide, in order, from left to right.
• Then add and subtract, in order, from left to right.

➤ Solve: 16 " 14 % 2
16 " 14 % 2

= 16 " 7 Divide first: 14 ÷ 2 = 7
Then subtract: 16 – 7 = 9
= 9

➤ Solve: 18 " 10 6
18 " 10 6

= 8 6
Subtract first: 18 – 10 = 8
= 14 Then add: 8 + 6 = 14

➤ Solve: 7 ! (4 8)
7 ! (4 8)

= 7 ! 12 Do the operation
in brackets first:
= 84 4 8 # 12
Then multiply:
7 ! 12 # 84

The order of operations is :

Brackets
Multiply and Divide
Add and Subtract
