Topic of the lesson: Introduction to CBA1

Where does this lesson fit in the topic/unit being taught?

Classroom-Based Assessments are occasions when the teacher assesses the students using
the specific tasks set out in the subject specification. They are included within the time
allocated for Business Studies, which is a minimum of 200 hours.

What prior knowledge do student have about this topic?

Students may have completed CBAs in other subjects this year.

Students will have a rudimentary understanding of what is involved in CBAs. Students who
have yet to complete a CBA will nonetheless have discussed them in class since the onset
of first year.

1. Aims In this lesson I will…

• Introduce students to the CBA, the associated timelines, and what is required of them
during this period.
• Introduce students to my CBA website and teach them how to access it, navigate it,
and use it correctly in order to aid them as they complete their CBA.
• Outline the grading system for the CBA and explain what is required to achieve each
different grade on the grading scale.
• Divide students into their CBA groups
• Use group work/breakout rooms to encourage students to come up with questions
about the CBA.

2. Learning Outcomes At the end of this lesson, students will be able


to….
(outline key ideas/concepts/content/vocabulary, use specific active verbs)

• Explain what the classroom-based assessment ‘business in action’ is and what it


involves.
• Describe what their specific task is and how will go about completing it.
• Articulate the four different areas of the CBA and the specific ‘deliverables’ (pieces
of work) that they are required to submit for each individual section.
• Identify and use effectively the different templates for the deliverables to be
completed for each section.
• Explain the grading system and describe the differing features of quality associated
with each of the four possible grades available
• Use the website ‘Mr O Donnell’s Business Studies.com’ to help them to complete
their CBA.

3. Assessment How will students’ learning progress be assessed?

• I will question students throughout the lesson to gauge their understanding of the
information being covered.
• I will use the group work/breakout rooms to assess students learning progress by
asking them to collaboratively explain to me their understanding of the task they
must complete for their CBA and the different steps that are involved, as well as
giving them the opportunity to ask questions about anything they are unsure of.

insights from the video.

Group discussion: students are asked to share their two takeaways from the 4 mins
video with the group.

The lesson is re-capped and the information covered is summarised again.

I question students to assess whether the learning intentions have been achieved.

Students have the opportunity to ask any remaining questions they may have regarding the
CBA.

I show students the online website ‘curriculum online’ where they can find information on
the CBA. I show them how to access samples of CBA work.

Homework:

1) Students must look up the curriculum online website and look up one sample of a
‘Business in Action’ CBA.

2) Student must come up with one potential idea for their CBA for the next class.

(15 mins total time)
