Analysis of a Simple Salt- Lead Nitrate

Aim: To analyse the given simple salt and to report the cation and anion with a systemic procedure.
Apparatus required: Test tubes, Boiling tubes, test tube stand, watch glass, spatula, and the required
chemicals.

S.No Experiment Observation Inference

Prelimiary tests:
1 Colour White Absence of coloured salts
like Cu2+, Fe2+or Fe3+
2 Odour/ Smell No characteristic smell Absence of NH4+ cation
3 Density Heavy May be Lead
4 Flame Test: Salt + Conc. No characteristic-coloured Absence of Ca2+ and Cu2+
HCl → made into a thin paste flame
and introduced into the
flame.
5 Dilute H2SO4 test: A small No characteristic observation Absence of CO32-
amount of salt + 2ml of dil.
H2SO4.
6 Conc. H2SO4 test: A small Light brown fumes are evolved Presence of NO3-
amount of salt + 2 drops of
Conc.H2SO4.
Analysis of anion
7 Silver Nitrate test: Salt + dil. No Characteristic observation Absence of Cl-
HNO3 + AgNO3 solution.
8 Dilute H2SO4 test: No effervescence Absence of CO3-
Salt + Dil.H2SO4
9 Barium chloride test: White precipitate which Absence of SO42-
Salt + dil. HCl + BaCl2 solution. dissolves in Dil. HCl
10 Confirmatory test of Nitrate:
(i) Salt + few copper turnings + 2 Evolution of brown fumes Presence of NO3- is
drops of Conc.H2SO4 and confirmed
heated.
(ii) Brown ring test: A dark brown ring is formed at Presence of NO3- is
Salt solution + 2 mL of Conc. the junction of the two confirmed
H2SO4-mixed thoroughly in a solutions
test tube and added freshly
prepared ferrous sulphate
solution along the sides of the
test tube
The given anion is Nitrate
Analysis of Cation
Inter group separation
11.Preparation of original solution: Original Solution is prepared by dissolving salt in water
Original solution + Nessler’s No precipitate Absence of zero group
reagent cation
Original solution + Dil.HCl Heavy white precipitate Presence of Group I cation
12. Confirmatory Test for Lead Cation
Salt + K2CrO4 solution Yellow precipitate of PbCrO4 Presence of Pb2+ is
confirmed
Salt + KI solution Yellow precipitate of PbI2 Presence of Pb2+ is
confirmed
The given cation is Lead
The given salt contains Lead as Cation and Nitrate as anion
