SST 307 Applied Statistical Methods - Cat2 Answer All Question

This document contains instructions and questions for a statistical methods assignment. It includes three questions: 1) Define the components of a one-way ANOVA statistical model and show that the sum of squares due to error divided by k(n-1) is an unbiased estimator of the variance. 2) Write the model for an analysis of covariance using data on weight gains from two diets, define the components, and complete the ANACOVA table, estimating the regression coefficient and testing hypotheses about it. 3) Use data on genotypes from a random mating population to test the hypothesis that the proportion of a particular allele in the parent population is 0.4, based on Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations.

Answer all question

Question 1
A statistical model for a one-way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) is given by
Yij = µ . + α i + ε ij , i = 1, 2, ..., k ; j = 1, 2, ..., n
a) Define each component of this model [2 marks]
b) The sum of squares due to error(SSE) is gives by
∑∑ (Y
2
SSE = ij − Y i. ) . Show that SSE divided by k (n − 1) is unbiased estimator
i j

of the variance σ 2 of ε ij . [5 marks]

Question 2

Suppose we wish to compare two diets. Two random samples of steers are selected.
Group I is fed on diet 1 for one month
Group II is fed on diet 2 for one month
Suppose we observe the following weight gains:

Diet 1 Diet 2
3.8 (325) 7.9 (480)
4.4 (340) 6.3 (475)
5.6 (470) 6.5 (490)
4.3 (358) 6.0 (500)

i) Write down the model to be used in the analysis, defining all the components in
reference to the given data [3 marks]
ii) Form the Analysis of covariance (ANACOVA) table adjusted for regression and
complete the analysis (use γ = 0.10 ). Show clearly how you compute the
components of the table. [10 marks]
iii) Estimate the regression coefficient β and test the hypothesis H 0 : β = 0 against
H a : β ≠ 0 at γ = 0.05 level of significance. Comment on the result of the test
[5 marks]

Question 3

According to the Hardy-Weinberg law in genetics, if the proportion of A alleles in the

population is p and that of a alleles is q(where q=1-p), and the population is mating at

random, then the proportion of AA, Aa, and aa genotypes in the progeny will be in the
ratios p2:2pq:q2. Out of 200 individuals from a random mating population, it was found
that there were 26 AA genotypes, 90 Aa genotypes, and 84 aa genotypes. Test the
hypothesis at γ = 0.05 that the proportion of A alleles in the parent population is 0.4.
