Exercise 1.27: X y X y

The document computes the x- and y-components of four vectors - A, B, C, and D - depicted in a figure. Vector A lies entirely along the y-axis, with components (0, -8) m. Vector B makes a 30° angle and has components (7.5, 13) m. Vector C makes a 25° angle and has components (-10.9, -5.07) m. Vector D makes a 53° angle and has components (-7.99, 6.02) m. Trigonometry is used to calculate the x- and y-components of each vector based on their angles and magnitudes.

Exercise 1.27

− →− →− →

Compute the x- and y-components of the vectors A, B, C , and D in Fig. E1.24.

Solution

Vector A

This vector lies entirely on the y-axis, so there is no x-component: Ax = 0. Since it points in the
negative y-direction, Ay = −8.

A = hAx , Ay i = h0, −8i m

Vector B

Decompose the vector B into components along the x- and y-axes.

Use trigonometry to determine Bx and By .

Bx 15
sin 30° = → Bx = 15 sin 30° =
15 2√
By 15 3
cos 30° = → By = 15 cos 30° =
15 2

Since the components of B point in the positive x- and y-directions, no minus signs are needed.
* √ +

− 15 15 3
B = hBx , By i = , m ≈ h7.5, 13i m
2 2

Vector C

Decompose the vector C into components along the x- and y-axes.

Use trigonometry to determine Cx and Cy .

Cx
cos 25° = → Cx = 12 cos 25° ≈ 10.9
12
Cy
sin 25° = → Cy = 12 sin 25° ≈ 5.07
12

Since both components of C point in the negative x- and y-directions, minus signs are needed in
both.

C = h−Cx , −Cy i = h−12 cos 25°, −12 sin 25°i m

Vector D

Decompose the vector D into components along the x- and y-axes.

Use trigonometry to determine Dx and Dy .

Dx
sin 53° = → Dx = 10 sin 53° ≈ 7.99
10
Dy
cos 53° = → Dy = 10 cos 53° ≈ 6.02
10

Since the x-component of D points in the negative x-direction, a minus sign is needed here.

D = h−Dx , Dy i = h−10 sin 53°, 10 cos 53°i m
