Inverse Functions

This document provides an overview of rational functions and inverse functions. It discusses key concepts such as: - One-to-one functions and how they never take the same output value twice for different input values. Their graphs pass the horizontal line test. - Inverse functions and how the inverse of a function f is denoted as f^-1. A function must be one-to-one for its inverse to be a function. - How to find the inverse of a one-to-one function by interchanging variables and solving for y in terms of x. - The domain of an inverse function is the range of the original function, and the range of the inverse is the domain of the original function.

Here is where your presentation begins
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES
❑ M11GM-Id-1: represents real-life situations using
one-to-one functions.
❑ M11GM-Id-2: determines the inverse of a one-to-
one functions
❑ M11GM-Id-3: represents an inverse function
through its (a) table of values, and (b) graph.
❑ M11GM-Id-4: finds the domain and range of an
inverse function.
❑ M11GM-Ie-2: Solves problems involving inverse
functions.
01
One-to-one
functions
Before we discuss Inverse Functions…
One-to-one functions
A function f is one-to-one if it never takes
the same value twice or 𝒇(𝒙𝟏 ) ≠ 𝒇(𝒙𝟐 ) whenever
(𝒙𝟏 ) ≠ (𝒙𝟐 ). That is, the same y-value is NEVER
paired with two different x-values.

One-to-one: NOT One-to-one:

Real-life applications of one-to-one function
✔ The relation of pairing a boyfriend to his girlfriend.
✔ The relation pairing an SSS member to his/her SSS number.
✔ The relation of a person to its passport.
✔ Chemical symbol to chemical element.
✔ Husband and wife
✔ Cellphone number to sim cards.
✔ Locations in Taguig City to its zip code.

× Distance travelled and jeepney fare.
Graph of a one-to-one function
If f is a one-to-one function then NO two
points (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) and (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ), have the same y-value.
Therefore, NO horizontal line cuts the graph of the
equation y = f(x) more than once.
Graph of a one-to-one function
HORIZONTAL LINE TEST – a graph passes the Horizontal
Line Test if each horizontal line cuts the graph at most once.
A function f is one-to-one if and only if the graph y =f(x)
passes the horizontal line test.
02 INVERSE FUNCTION
Inverse functions
The inverse of a function is a function with domain B and
range A given that the original function has domain A and
range B.
This inverse function of function f is denoted by 𝒇−𝟏 . It is
defined by the equation 𝒇−𝟏 𝒚 = 𝒙 if and only if 𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒚 for
any 𝑦 in range B.
Since both are functions, then a function has to be one-to-
one for its inverse to be a function at the same time. If it is a
many-to-one function, its inverse is one-to-many which is not
a function.
INVERSE functions
Properties:
1. The inverse function reflects on
the line y=x (called the Axis of
Symmetry ) in the cartesian
plane.
2. f −1 is a function if f is one-to-
one function.
3. Domain of f −1 is the range of f.
4. Range of f −1 is the domain of f.
5. f(f −1 (𝑥)) = 𝑥
6. f −1 f 𝑥 =𝑥
to find the inverse of one-to-one function
Solving the inverse of a function:
1. Write the function in the form y = f(x)
2. Interchange x and y variables.
3. Solve for y in terms of x.
4. Replace y by f −1 (x).
5. Verify if f and f −1 are inverse functions.
