Safety
Safety discusses the different general precautions when
handling or servicing the equipment. Its target is the safety
procedures to ensure that occurrence of accident can be avoided
and prevented.
Maintenance
Maintenance is focused on discussing detailed information to
taking care of the equipment and how it should be maintained to
elongate the span of using the equipment without damaging or
destroying the equipment.
Technical Specifications
Technical Specifications consist of all technical data therein
to know about the equipment. It discusses the overall dimension of
the equipment, its unique technical characteristics, lifting
capacities (this differs to each equipment but in this case, excavator
is used), Etc.
SERVICE MANUAL
Service manual or Shop manual helps technicians and other trained
people service, maintain, and repair equipment. It usually contains information
on the problems and breakages that may occur and guidelines on how to fix
them.
It mainly discusses:
o Structure and Functions
In which it gives details on different functions of the
composition of the equipment and how each part works. This
Structure includes powertrains, transmission, axles, steering
unit, etc.
o Standard Maintenance
Standard Maintenance difference from Maintenance
procedure found in Operations and Maintenance manual is,
it focuses to the large portions in the equipment (in this case
excavator) such as transmission, front & rear axles, hydraulic
pump, control valves, Proportional Pressure Control valves,
shovel cylinders, backhoe cylinders, front working equipment,
swing bracket, and backhoe working equipment.
USER’S MANUAL
Assist’s operators to use a particular system or device. It provides
instructions for both skilled and unskilled users for setup, operation, and
maintenance of a product. It may have precautions and problem guidelines.
OPERATION MANUAL
Provides guidance for the staff to perform their functions correctly and
efficiently. It describes what and how should be done, which is especially

Overview
This section provides a general overview of the physical outlook being
discussed as well as the components covered in the manual. It includes
some information of the equipment such as name, brand, model, etc.,
company or other background information.

It’s important to think through emergency situations before they
happen because it can be difficult to remember details in the middle of a
chaotic situation. This section discusses all emergency protocol to keep both
the operator and the equipment safe during emergencies.
Technical Data
This section of the manual gives the specs or technical characteristics
of the parts of and equipment, which details mass, bucket capacity, engine
power, electrical system, travel speeds and tires (for wheel type, trackpads
for crawlers) and most specially lifting capacities and the length of the boom
to bucket capacities.

Instructions on Manuals
The value of each manual is very important when having an
equipment. Also known as “user manual” is an important document that
helps operator and technicians get on board with the product or servicing
quickly, or help to solve an issue when stuck.
Tables of Content
Most operator and technicians typically look at the table of content,
find the topic or page they are looking for, and then quickly read the part
which they want to know more about. Nobody is reading manuals from start
to finish, but everyone is reading parts of it.
Task Analysis
Early in the process, the situation of instructions is defined.
Remember that defining a task means defining the level of familiarity you
have with the activity.
Dig a trench.
Lift a boulder.
Excavate for a foundation.
Unearthing a heavy soil
Demolish a building
These are tasks—the typical things we’d want to do with the machine.

jobs and setup jobs. It is important to practice safe handling
procedures regardless of the type of goods. While some goods are
lightweight, delicate and fragile, others a heavy, clumsy and even
dangerous to deal with during the unloading and unpacking process.
Since the nature of goods varies greatly, as per our above examples, a

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:
1. Determine how to apply information written in a manual
2. Identify the steps to be applied and correctly followed.
Introduction
A manual, is a technical communication documents intended to give
assistance to people using system. It is usually written by a technical expert
and user guide are most commonly associated with electronics, electric
goods, computer hardware and software.
Valuing and following the steps is a must to fully utilize the
effectiveness of the instruction written in a manual. In this information
sheet everything about learning how to apply and function the way the
manual delivers will be the highlight of discussion.

Introduction
Manuals, as discussed previously in this module, are indispensable
documents as with tools and equipment needed in fixing, operating and
troubleshooting the equipment. Any project or job needs some bases such as

these manuals to bring them to completion. Considering the importance
role, they play, these manuals should be kept properly for future job or
service reference. If possible, they have to be covered with plastic cover to
preserve their life. Proper labeling should be done by type for facility. Thus,
storing should be by type.
Create clear and concise file names - A file name should clearly
describe what is contained inside the file. You want to be able to see

the file name and understand what is contained within the file
without having to open the file and gaze inside the contents.
Prepare file folders and hanging files - Grab a bunch of files and
hanging folders and start labeling them according to the list(s) you
prepared. Take your time when preparing your file folders. You don’t
want to unintentionally create duplicate files or mislabel items. Start
by labeling one file folder and then set the folder aside. Continue the
process with the remainder of your file folders.
Prepare your filing cabinet - prepare your filing cabinet. Remove the
contents of your filing cabinet (if any) and place them onto a clean,
flat surface for the time being. If you’re working with an empty or
brand-new filing cabinet, you can start placing your pre-labeled
hanging files and folders into the cabinet according to your file
system.
Place papers into file folders - Now it’s time to place your papers
and documents into the appropriate folders. Feel free to refer back to
your filing system and file list as needed to remind yourself as to
what goes where. When placing papers inside of folders, you should
organize papers in either chronologic or reverse chronologic order.
This will make it easy to retrieve information when you need it.
1. Gather – put into one place all of your manuals in the workstation.
2. Decide – think of how you are going to divide your instructional manuals,
3. Divide – Split your binder into section and label them according to the
5. Place – put your filed documents in between the protective plastic sleeves
6. Label – Label your binder e.g., “Instructional Manual” in the cover to give
it designation.
7. Store – finally put your binder in your cabinet or any safe and convenient
place to be available for use when needed.
