Overview of Multimedia System

This document provides an introduction to multimedia systems. It defines multimedia as computer information represented through audio, video and animation in addition to traditional text and graphics. A multimedia system is described as a collection of interacting elements organized for a common purpose, capable of processing multimedia data and applications. Key elements of multimedia discussed include text, graphics, animation, video and audio. Multimedia systems are also categorized as either linear, with no user interactivity, or non-linear, which allows user control over content and navigation. Components of a multimedia system include capture devices, storage, communication networks, computer systems and display devices. Applications are also listed.

INTRODUCTION TO

MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS
MULTIMEDIA
◦ means that computer information can be represented through
audio, video, and animation in addition to traditional media (text,
graphics/drawings, images).

◦ media that uses multiple form of information content and

information processing.
SYSTEM
◦ is a group of interacting or interelated entities that form a
unified whole.

◦ is a collection of elements or components that are organized

for a common purpose.
MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM
◦ is a system capable of processing multimedia data and
applications. It is characterized by the processing, storage,
generation, manipulation and rendition of Multimedia
information.
ELEMENTS OF
MULTIMEDIA
TEXT
◦ characters that are used to create words, sentences,
and paragraphs. ss

Multimedia is a rich medium that accommodates numerous

instructional strategies. Multimedia addresses many of the challenges
of instruction in both the academic and corporate environments. It is
accessible over distance and time and provides a vehicle for
consistent delivery. Multimedia can provide the best medium with
which to communicate a concept.
GRAPHICS
◦ A digital representation of non-text information,
such as a drawing, chart, or photograph.
TWO CATEGORIES OF GRAPHICS
◦ Vector Graphics
◦ Images created with software that uses
geometrical formulas to represent images.

◦ Composed of individual elements, eg, arc, line,

polygon, with their own attributes that can be
individually edited.
Vector Graphics Vector Graphics
Advantages Disadvantages
• The ability to resize and rotate a • One of the drawbacks of vector
graphic without distortions a graphics is that more complex
major advantage of vector they are, the larger the file size
graphics and the longer they take to
appear the screen
• Another advantage is their
smaller file size • Another disadvantage is that
they cannot display
photorealistic quality
TWO CATEGORIES OF GRAPHICS
◦ Bitmap Graphics
◦ Bitmap graphics are also called raster graphics.

◦ A bitmap represents the image as an array of dots,

called pixels.

◦ Bitmap graphics are resolution-dependent and

generate large file sizes.
Bitmap Graphics Bitmap Graphics
Advantages Disadvantages
• The bitmap can be more • Bitmaps are memory intensive,
photorealistic and the higher the resolution,
the larger the file size
• We can set the color of every
individual pixel in the image • When the image is enlarged, the
individual colored squares
become visible and the illusion
of a smooth image is lost to the
viewer
ANIMATION
◦ Flipping through a series of still images. It is a
series of graphics that create an illusion of
motion.
VIDEO
◦ is the technology of electronically capturing, recording, processing,
storing, transmitting, and reconstructing a sequence of still images
representing scenes in motion.

◦ photographic images that are played back at speeds of 15 to 30

frames a second and the provide the appearance of full motion.
AUDIO
◦ The best way to attract attention
◦ Often audio provides the only effective way to convey an idea,
elicit an emotion, or dramatize point.
◦ music, speech, or any other sound.
CATEGORIES OF
MULTIMEDIA
LINEAR MULTIMEDIA
◦ Not interactive
◦ User have no control over the content
◦ User are not given navigational control
NON-LINEAR MULTIMEDIA
◦ Interactive
◦ User have control over the content
◦ User are given navigational control
COMPONENTS OF A MULTIMEDIA
SYSTEM
◦ Capture devices
◦ Storage devices
◦ Communication networks
◦ Computer systems
◦ Display devices
APPLICATIONS OF MULTIMEDIA
◦ World wide web ◦ Groupware
◦ Hypermedia courseware ◦ Home shopping
◦ Video conferencing ◦ Games
◦ Video on demand ◦ Virtual reality
◦ Interactive tv ◦ Digital video editing and production system

HYPERTEXT
◦ Example:
◦ A linkage between related
information. Presentation template by Slidesgo

◦ The word you click that takes ●
Icons by Flaticon
you to the link ●
Images & infographics by Freepik
◦ It is like the hyperlink but the link
is embedded to a word or a
phrase.
HYPERLINK
◦ is a reference to data that the
reader can directly follow either by
clicking, tapping, or hovering.
◦ Link that you can follow by clicking
or tapping
◦ LINK- a website address/URL
◦ https://www.flaticon.com/
HYPERMEDIA

◦ The use of hyperlinks, regular text, graphics, audio

and video to provide an interactive, multimedia
presentation.

 The World Wide Web (WWW) is the best example

of hypermedia applications.
