Antonio Pigafetta's journal provided detailed accounts of Ferdinand Magellan's historic circumnavigation of the globe from 1519 to 1522, recording facts about the people, places, and events they encountered. As one of the few survivors of the expedition, Pigafetta aimed to document all aspects of the voyage for posterity. His chronicle became the primary source of information about the first circumnavigation and helped establish Europeans' understanding of geography, cultures, and navigation in that era.

Activity Sheet

Instruction: Read the text by Antonio Pigafetta: His Chronicles on the Voyage
Around the World and write a reaction paper by answering the following questions:

1. What kind of document is it (letter, ad, newspaper, etc.)?

Pigafetta’s journal or travelogue became the prime source of information for numerous
details during the voyage. Hence, Magellan’s expedition certainly paved the way for
greater interactions between different parts of the globe. Indeed, it symbolically linked
different cultures.

2. To whom was the written document addressed? How did you know?

Pigafetta’s hope of learning about the world which drives him to write documents
became a significant part of today’s history. His daily notes were the basis of how the
world’s first circumnavigation was and be understood with certainty. He
encountered new people for our basis today- know what they look like, where they live,
what they eat, what they say, and gives us pages of words to give a barrage of detail.
Because his document is considered to be the finest discovery and exploration
literature.

3. What is the purpose of the document? What made you think so?

The primary reason of Antonio Pigafetta in writing the document is to discover and
learn about the world. Because he wanted to record details and information during the
expedition which caused him to join the voyage and served as an assistant to Magellan.
Magellan desired to prove that the world was round and through his investigation, he
proved it.However, they faced so much circumstance leaving Magellan dead
while Pigafetta managed to survive along with his journal.

4. What do you think is the most important information that the author of the

document was conveying? Why?

Every details and information of the events that occurred during the expedition was
equally important for today’s understanding of the past. Because they made great
voyages into the unknown, full of danger, adventure and discovery. Base on my own
evaluation, because of Pigafetta’s document, it impacted people of 16th century in terms
of consciousness of the multicultural reality since multiculturalism exactly appeared as
the decent variety of individuals and societies that reached one another. It can be
inferred that the first globalization of our world began at that time. Also, his document
might have let people realized the variety of beliefs and tradition practiced during their
time which helped shaped their identity. Through Pigafetta’s documents, people have
engaged to many different fields. In conclusion, documents produced by Pigafetta
impacted the people socially, culturally, and environmentally. His documents
proved to the pilgrims and other people that circumnavigating is possible.

5. What do you think are the possible biases committed by Pigafetta in writing

this account?

You might easily recognize Pigafetta's prejudices if you read the whole journal of
Pigafetta, or even just a portion of it. For example Pigafetta, like other Spaniards, was
only interested in Magellan's activities (such as meeting with Datus) but he didn't
record the full discussion in his diary. Contrary to what has been recorded in first-hand
accounts published in the Philippines and used in both public and private institutions,
the records in Pigafetta's journal contradict the assertions of many authors of Philippine
history books. Pigafetta's goal may have been to focus solely on the expedition and his
colleagues' actions, rather than to include all of the events that occurred during their
last journey to the Philippines. Also, i think Pigafetta didn’t recorded the voyage free
from biases because he is part of the expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan and he
serves as Magellan’s assistant. With this, biases can’t be avoided as he writes it in his
own perspective or point of view. He never wrote negative things about Magellan. He
always presents and describe Magellan with good remarks.

REACTION PAPER
Antonio Pigafetta is a young Italian scholar who traveled to the spice island with
Magellan. He was one of the fortunate survivors of Magellan's voyage. He played an
important part in the trip by providing a thorough report of it. His account of
Magellan's voyage was just one of several works he wrote about global explorations.
His description of Magellan's Voyage became the most significant and unique record of
the period. He was able to account for all of the events that transpired throughout the
journey. It's a piece that's all about wonder. In travel writing, it's common to have to
recreate that first sensation of wonder, that fresh sense of astonishment, on the page for
the reader, and Antonio Pigafetta achieved just that by exposing weird and odder
details. Furthermore, his thorough account covers the food they ate, the unclear water
they drink, the number of passengers who became ill, and the number of those who
died throughout the journey. He has also ensured that they were in the same area at all
times by mentioning the degrees of the compass as well as the total number of days and
months of the journey. Antonio Pigafetta's ability to provide the reader a means to join a
moment, a mood, and a body is one of the most amazing characteristics I've noticed on
this account. One example is his description of the Battle of Mactan, in which he
explains how Lapu-warriors Lapu's fought and their battlefield strategy. Also, in the
Death of Magellan, his narration transports me to Magellan's anguish when he was
struck by an arrow.
