Components/Parts of A System Unit: Shiela Jean Alumbro Bpa 1-C

The document lists and describes the key components of a computer system unit: 1) The power supply converts electrical energy and powers the system. 2) The chipset manages data flow between the processor, memory, and peripherals. 3) Fans cool the circuitry by pulling in cool air and expelling hot air. 4) Additional components include the video card, modem card, sound card, CD/DVD drive, hard drive, motherboard, power cords, ribbon cables, and extra case fans.

COMPONENTS/PARTS OF A SYSTEM UNIT

1.POWER SUPPLY - Power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric energy to an
electric load. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to
another and, as a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters.

2.CHIP - In a computer system, a chipset is a set of electronic components in an integrated circuit

known as a "Data Flow Management System" that manages the data flow between the processor,
memory and peripherals. It is usually found on the motherboard.

3.FAN - The role of the computer fan is to pull cooler air into the computer to cool the hot circuitry,
particularly the CPU. In a desktop the fan is typically a part of the power supply and draws air
through it, helping to keep that part of the computer cool.

4.VIDEO CARD - A graphics card (also called a video card, display card, graphics adapter, or
display adapter) is an expansion card which generates a feed of output images to a display device
(such as a computer monitor).

5.MODERN CARD - A modem card is an internal type of modem that is plugged into the PCI slot of
a PC motherboard. A modem is a communications device that allows a computer to send and
receive data through telephone or cable lines.

6.SOUND CARD - The main function of a sound card is to play audio, usually music, with varying
formats (monophonic, stereophonic, various multiple speaker setups) and degrees of control. The
source may be a CD or DVD, a file, streamed audio, or any external source connected to a sound
card input. Audio may be recorded.
7.CD/DVD DRIVE - Compact disc(CD) and digital versatile disc (DVD) are storage devices onto
which certain amount of audio files, data and other computer files can be stored. Videos can also be
stored on them as well. CD-ROM can hold about 700MB of data while DVD-ROM can hold about
4.7GB of data. CD and DVD drives’ functions are to read whatever data has been stored on CDs
and DVDs respectively. A DVD drive can read a CD but a CD drive cannot read DVD. There are
other drives like the CD-R drive; it can read and write a CD-R, DVD-R drive; it can read and write a
CD-R and DVD-R, CD-RW drive; it can read, write, erase and re-write a CD-RW. There is also a
DVD-RW drive which can also read, write, erase and re-write a DVD-RW and a CD-RW as well.

8.HARD DRIVE - The major storage device of the computer system is the hard disk or Hard drive.
Unlike the RAM that stores data temporary, the hard drive stores information, files and other
documents permanently as its main function and also allows the retrieval of data but it is non-
volatile(data is not loss when the computer goes off). Operating system and application software
(apps) are installed on the hard drive. The amount of data a hard drive can hold depends on its
capacity. The capacity of the hard drives I have seen so far ranges from 20gigabytes(20GB) to
2terabytes(2TB). Most of the modern system units or chassis can contain two hard drives where one
can be used as ‘master'(primary) Hard drive; the one onto which the operating system is installed,
and the other as ‘slave'(secondary) Hard drive; on which documents and other files can be stored in
oder not to overload the primary hard drive to avoid slowing down of the system. The secondary
hard drive also serves as a backup in case the primary hard drive crushes.

9.MOTHERBOARD - The motherboard is the main internal hardware component of the system unit
or core of the system. Literally, it is a hub of the computer. It is also called the system board or
main board. All other components are linked to it one way or another. This part includes all the
controllers managing all the standard peripheral devices, such as mouse, keyboard, the display
screen and the disk drive. Being a backbone of the computer, motherboard coordinates various
devices, serves as a place for installing other crucial parts of the computer.

10.POWER CORDS - A power cord also known as a line cord or main cable which connects an
appliance to the main electricity supply through a wall socket or extension cord. They come handy
generally when you use them for cables with a power plug to connect with the single-phase altering
current power source at the local voltage. It is the primary cable that provides power to the computer,
printer, monitor, and components within a computer. an electrical cable that temporarily connects an
appliance to the mains electricity supply via a wall socket or extension cord.

11.RIBBON CABLE - used for data transmission and communications. It is often chosen for
computer cable applications, where it is used as internal wiring for hard drives, CD drives, and more.

12.EXTRA CASE FAN - The case fan is to keep the system unit cooled. Case fans help bring cool
air into and blow hot air out of the case.
