Final Project Research Worksheet
Final Project Research Worksheet
Once that you have learned a bit about search strategies from the module, the next step is to
try to apply it to the research question you created in the Module 4 Discussion. This will get
you started with some preliminary research for your Final Project.
Refer to the information, videos, and resources in the Research Skills area of Module 3 for
guidance tailored to this assignment. Each of the steps below has resources associated with it.
Please review these resources as you complete the worksheet.
Fill out the table below to develop the strings you will use to conduct your search, making sure
to complete each row in order. Make sure to use what you learned from the videos, resources,
and samples.
1. According to the video, where are some places you can search to find reliable
information on your research question?
1. Why are research databases more helpful to researchers than using just Google
Search?
2. Selecting a Database: We recommend using the general Academic Search Ultimate
database for this class. However, if this database does not work for your topic, feel free
to use the techniques discussed in the video and choose a database to find a more
specialized database for your topic. What database did you choose to search for articles
on your research question?
1. Navigate to the database you chose in Step 4. Here is the link for Academic Search
Ultimate.
3. Enter the search string you created in Step 3 of this worksheet into the database.
4. How many results did you find? (If 0 or you aren’t finding articles that interest you in the
first couple pages of results, then check out the “Troubleshooting” section and try an
adjusted search).
5. Check the abstracts, look at the journal title, keywords, and article titles for sources on
the list. Do the results seem relevant? How do you know? (If you have not found a
relevant article from your search, look at the “Troubleshooting” section for tips and make
adjustments until you find what you need).
1. Select an article to use for this assignment. What makes it interesting and connected to
your topic?
6. Write down (or copy and paste) the citation for one of the articles you have found that
seem relevant. (Warning: the URL in your browser’s address bar for the article may not
take you back to the article later. Make sure you write down the citation). Any style you
choose is fine as long as it has the author(s), publication date, journal title, and article
title.
Step 5: Determine what you can learn from the article (5 points)
Consider the article you chose in Step 6 and answer the questions below. You may want to
read the questions first and then skim and take notes on the article. You may need to read
parts of the article multiple times.
1. What is the main question the authors are trying to answer and their hypothesis?
7. What type of experimental methods did they employ? (Did they make a model? Study
data retroactively?)
8. What was the major finding?
9. What do you think they could have done better?
10. What would you study next?
Review the above steps and make sure you have successfully completed all the questions.
Make sure to explain your reasoning when asked. Then submit this worksheet to Blackboard.
Complete the assignment by the due date in the Course Schedule and Calendar.
