a. Dispensing - Refers to the sum of processes performed by a pharmacist from reading, validating, and
interpreting prescriptions; preparing; packaging; labeling; record keeping; dose calculations; and
counseling or giving information.
b. Filling - Refers to the act of dispensing or providing medicines in accordance with a prescription or
medication order.
c. Prescription - A physician's order for the preparation and administration of a drug or device for a patient
d. Medication Order - written directions provided by a prescribing practitioner for a specific medication to be
administered to an individual.
e. Tamper Resistant Prescription Pads -
f. E-prescribing/ E-prescriptions - is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart.
g. Electronic Health Record - is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart.
h. Medication Verification - term used when there is a process in place to assure the above bullet points.
i. Medication Adherence - the voluntary cooperation of the patient in taking drugs or medicine as prescribed,
including timing, dosage, and frequency.
j. Medication Non-adherence - when patients don't take their medications as prescribed
k. Medication Disposal – expired, unused, spilt, and contaminated pharmaceutical products, drugs, and vaccines,
that are no longer required and need to be disposed of appropriately. Pharmaceutical waste is classified as
hazardous and non-hazardous waste
l. Generic Name – active ingredient, nonproprietary name
m. Brand Name – or trade name is a name (usually a proper noun) applied by a manufacturer or
organization to a particular product or service.
n. Dosage Strength - The strength of a drug product, which indicates the amount of active ingredient in each
dosage.
o. Dosage Form - A term for the physical characteristics of a drug product—e.g., tablet, capsule or solution—
which contains the drug substance and almost invariably other ingredients, such as excipient, fillers,
flavors, preservatives, emulsifiers, etc.

Medication Order
-20 milliequivalent of potassium chloride in Sodium Chloride at 25 mL per hour
Take 1000 mL (1L) of dextrose 5% in water every 8 hours, intravenously with 20
milliequivalent potassium chloride
Take 30 mg of Flurazepam at bedtime as needed for sleep
Take 1 teaspoon of minocycline chloride for 4 days and discontinue after 5 days
Take 10 mg of Propranolol by mouth, thrice a day before meals and at bed time
3. A Rx is to be taken as follows:
1 tablet qid, the first 7 days; 1 tablet bid x 5d; 1 tablet qd thereafter.
Take 1 tablet for 4 times a day in the first 7 days, then take 1 tablet twice a day for 5 days then take 1 tablet
everyday thereafter.
Take 40 mg of Simvastatin orally at bedtime for 15 days , then 20 mg of Simvastatin taken orally at
bedtime for 15 days.
