03 QUIZ 1 – ARG
Read the following scenarios and respond to the questions below. You may respond with text or
attachment. (40 points)
Scenario A: Elsie is searching for tour packages online through a search engine. She even registered to a
travel website and provided her personal information to receive promotional messages from that
website. Since then, she has received numerous online marketing messages from the website and other
websites selling tour packages. She is bothered by this activity since she tends to miss reading her work-
related e-mails from deleting promotional messages and accidentally deleting work e-mails. She is also
anxious by the fact that other online travel websites have known her personal e-mail.
Scenario B: Jeremy is a travel writer whose works are published by a reputable travel agency located in a
major city. One time, one of his friends shared an image of his write-up published by another travel
website. The images used were different, but all contents are exactly his own.
Scenario C: Meriam has been operating a travel agency for over two (2) years now. She has no physical
office and operates solely online. Her business is registered within her municipality, but she does not issue
official receipts for her transactions. Thus, there is no basis for the amount of dues she needs to pay to
the government at the end of each year.
Scenario D: Nora has found out that her eldest son, who is only 12 years old, is already a chain smoker.
Selling cigarettes to individuals below 18 years old has been banned in their locality for two (2) years
already. She is confused about where her son makes his purchases, although they have 24-hour Wi-Fi
connectivity at home, which everyone can connect to and conduct online shopping.
Discussion Questions:
1. What issues or problems are apparent in the given scenarios? To which e-commerce issues do
these relate?
2. What solutions or measures can you recommend to prevent such issues or problems from
happening?
Answers:
1. SCENARIO A: Based on Elsie's scenario, she started receiving emails from other various websites
when she accessed a search engine to find tour packages online. After she registers on this
website and enters her personal information, many emails are appeared and the worst is that she
accidently deleted her working emails, besides of that, many websites are already knew her
personal e-mail. The e-commerce issue that can be seen in this scenario is the Privacy Issue which,
it is prevalent today and even I, have encountered it. With the extreme desire of some business
entities to catch the attention of possible clients, they also access their private information which
gives an uncomfortable experience to it.
SCENARIO B: The issue that noticed in the second scenario is the appearance of Jeremy's work on
a website with a different photo but the same content as he did after his friends shared it. The e-
commerce issue that can be applied here is the Intellectual Property Rights where others can
obtain, copy or use your work in other ways through using the Internet. There is also a law under
of it which is the Republic Act No. 8293 also known as Intellectual Property code of the Philippines.
SCENARIO C: On the 3rd Scenario, if you notice, Meriam has a retail business where she operates
her services through online. The issue that can be seen here is that Meriam does not have official
receipts to issue for her clients and there is no record of her bills to the government. This issue is
under Governance which is the Taxation where, the government collects tax on all business
entities whether large or small for other projects and operations funds to support.
SCENARIO D: So as mentioned in the scenario, the issue that can be seen here is Nora’s 12 year-
old eldest son who turns into chain smoker. Since they have WI-FI connectivity at home, that’s
probably where his son learned to buy cigarettes. The e-commerce issue under it is Public Safety
and Welfare which takes into account the protection of children from any illegal act such as
pornography, gambling, sale of illicit drugs or cigarettes in any public media.
2. SCENARIO A: The suggestion I can propose is that, as educated individuals using the internet, we
can read carefully what appears on our monitors. Also, after we become aware or encounter such
situation, we can inform others so that they understand what should be the right thing to do,
especially for children or others who do not know how to use computers very well since we can
no longer avoid this in the Internet World.
SCENARIO B: Since we do not control the internet and many people can access it, we can sign our
works on its very surface when image or on its very paper when articles, journals, or research so
that even when edited, you will still see your name and an original copy of your work will appear
when you search for it on the internet. In this way, you can also see and notice if someone has
taken, copied, or used your property.
SCENARIO C: If I am to be asked, it is also prevalent now a days especially in business entities and
it is called “Colorum” where they operate their services but they do not follow the protocol in
having a business. To avoid colorum companies, always find out or conduct searching before
transacting with such businesses and in case you encountered it, inform those in charge so that it
does not continue.
SCENARIO D: Since young generation is also focused in online or internet today, we cannot avoid
what they should not see or know but as a responsible parent, we should inform them of what
they should know and not especially if it will ruin their lives that is why there are some commercial
companies today that are very careful with their advertisements because sensitive content or
unusual content is also banned in commercials because it can affect the children who watch it.
