GRADE 3
WRITING A NOTE

Expressing “thank you" and "I'm sorry" is powerful. These simple gestures, when genuine, can
yield fabulous results.

WHY WRITE A THANK-YOU NOTE?

Thank-you notes not only show good manners, but are also good for your health!
Yes, it’s true! If you send a thank-you note, you and your gesture will never be
forgotten. The recipients are simply touched by the warmth of the note, making
them happy.
WHICH OCCASIONS REQUIRE A THANK-YOU NOTE?
A gift traditionally requires a thank-you note from the recipient, no matter what
the occasion for the gift is — a holiday, birthday, religious event, award, or
accomplishment.
Thank-you notes are also recommended when services have been performed
(especially as a favour or for free), when hospitality has been provided, or in
appreciation of generosity or thoughtfulness.
WHEN SHOULD A THANK-YOU NOTE BE WRITTEN?
Thank you notes are to be written immediately after the event. The longer you
wait, the harder it becomes, and the less appreciative you will appear.

HOW DO I WRITE A THANK-YOU NOTE?

1. Keep each note short—three or four sentences should be fine.
2. Write something personal/emotional about the giver. Use phrases like “You
are so thoughtful!” or “Your gift was truly special!”.
3. Comment on what you will do with the gift (especially if it is money) and/or how
you will use the gift.
4. Express your thanks for the gift and the giver, e.g. his or her generosity or
kindness or on what a special place he or she occupies in your family or heart or
circle of friends.
5. Be sincere and original.
Here are some examples of Thank You notes –

Dear Melissa
Thank you for thinking of me on my birthday and sending me the fun necklace.
I love the colours and have already received compliments for it. It is funny how
you always know my taste in jewellery. Thanks a ton!
Love
Grace

Dear Grandma
Thank you for the cosy sweater. It will keep me warm when I go ice skating. I
hope that you will come with me sometime. Thanks again. You always pick the
perfect gift for me!
Lots of love
Michael

Dear Amy
I truly appreciate the help that you have given me through the week. If not for
you, I would not have been able to catch up with all my school work that I had
missed. Thanks a million. I know that I can always count on you.
You are the best!
Fiona
