Summary of Design for Section 2 Ref.3

Analysis & Design Basis
Due to inclined struts, the capping beam modelled and value of maximum forces have from Staad
analysis.

Caping Beam Type = Type 2

Yield strength of steel, fy = 500 MPa
Compressive strength of concrete, fcu = 40 MPa
Width of waller beam, w = 1500 mm
Depth of waller beam, D = 640.0 mm
Effective depth, d = 533 mm
Clear cover = 75 mm
Diameter of shear reinforcement = 16 mm
Diameter of main reinforcement = 32 mm

Analysis & Design Results

Based on the ultimate forces, rebar for both the faces (soil & excavation) have been determined
using BS 8110. As the capping beam is resting on the D-wall and there is no active forces on top
and bottom faces of capping beam, therefore, only minimum rebar will be provided at these faces.

Ref. 1 Ref. 2
Maximum Values Required Rebar Area (mm2)
Moment Exc. face (kNm) 663.7 4190.6
Moment Soil face (kNm) 1077.8 7183.4
Shear Exc. Soil (kN) 743.3 804.2

Note: factor of 1.5 has been used to determine the ultimate forces (moment and shear forces)
%age
Provided rebar at vertical face on exc. side = 4823.0 mm2 0.60 %
Provided rebar on vertical face at soil side = 7234.6 mm2 0.90 %
Provided rebar on top face = 1609 mm2 0.20 % (min)
Provided rebar on bottom face = 1609 mm2 0.20 % (min)
Provided shear area = 804.2 mm2
Therefore 4 Nos. of 16 @ 300 links shall be provided for shear reinforcement.
