Topic: The internal system of The church (part 1)

Objective: know that our confession of Jesus as Lord and savior is better seen in the attitudes we put
forth. Everyone is expected to resolve to live the code of Christian.
Introduction: A physical body has organs and fluids that keep it alive and functioning. So a church must
have internal systems, certain spiritual attitudes, since the church is likened to a body. The life of a church
comes from those systems. The goal of the church should be to generate proper spiritual attitudes in the
hearts of the people. They must generate the spiritual attitudes that will motivate people to proper
behavior. A person can do something good outwardly, yet have a bad attitude. However, good outward
behavior should come from good attitudes. These attitudes are: obedience, love, thankfulness,
accountability, faithfulness, dependence, unity, desire to grow etc. they are called internal system; these
qualities show god’s work in you.
1.Obedience: who said obedience is better than sacrifice and to whom? Why did he say that? And what
did he mean? Observe the text.
Obedience stands above all other attitudes. An obedient person does whatever God says to do. He does
not compromise. If God says something, that’s it—there is nothing to argue about. It’s important for us to
have God’s Word in our hearts and minds so that we know how to be obedient. Obedience is the sine qua
non of all right attitudes. Behavior without an attitude of obedience is meaningless; internal obedience is
better than any external act of worship (1 Sam. 15:22). Furthermore, obedience leads to other right
spiritual attitudes. There are several other important reasons to live an obedient life: to glorify God, to
receive blessings, to be a witness to unbelievers, and to be an example for other Christians. Being
obedient also allows us to be filled with the Spirit. When we’re filled with the Spirit, we’re able to reach
out to unbelievers and set an example for those who watch how we live. Jesus says in Luke 6:46, “Why
call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” If Jesus is Lord of your life, you should do
what He asks you to do. Matthew 7:13–14 says that the path to salvation is narrow. That’s because it is
confined by God’s will, law, and Word. We are to affirm Christ as Lord (Rom. 10:9–10) and submit to
His lordship. That means living a life of obedience. Someone will say, “I go to church. Isn’t that
enough?” First Samuel 15:22 says, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” Ritual will never replace obedience.
In 1 Peter 1 the apostle says to “gird up the loins of your mind” (v. 13). In other words, make sure your
priorities are right. Be “obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your
ignorance” (v. 14). Don’t live the way you did before you became a Christian. You are to be an obedient
child. Jesus said, “Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” (Luke 11:28). Paul,
commending the Roman Christians, said, “Your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad”
(Rom. 16:19).
2.Unity John 17:21. Jesus prayed that all Christians would be one, just as He and the Father are one, so
that the world would know He was sent by the Father. He prayed that we would be unified (John 17:21).
That basically refers to the unity of believers as a result of salvation, but Jesus also wants us to have unity
in the life and purpose of the church. The apostle Paul told the Ephesians to endeavor “to keep the unity
of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3). He didn’t tell them to generate unity; they already had it.
They were tomaintain the unity God had already given them. Unity is an important part of church life.
That’s why Satan constantly attacks it. Unity brings God glory. It honors His name No one is perfect, so
there will always be little things that people disagree about. Nevertheless, we should always get on our
knees together and seek to maintain the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace (Eph.4:3). That was the
desire of the New Testament writers. Paul poured his heart out to the Corinthians, saying, “I beseech you,
brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no
divisions among you, but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them who are of the house of Chloe, that there
are contentions among you” (1 Cor. 1:10–11). Application. How much obedience are you to God’s
word? Examine yourself because your obedience is equal to your how much you love God. Is there
disunity in LBC? Are you in anyway a cause? Is the LBC united? Are you part?

Topic: The internal system of the church (part2)

Objective: know that our confession of Jesus as Lord and savior is better seen in the attitudes we put
forth. Everyone is expected to resolve to live the code of Christian.

Introduction: Recap of last week lesson. what is the internal system of the church?

3. Self-Discipline 1Cor. 9:24–27

Christians need to realize how important it is for us to conform to God’s divine standard. Self-discipline
means staying away from sin and doing only what is right. The disciplined person understands the law of
God and doesn’t do anything outside the bounds of that standard. Paul talks about self-discipline in 1Cor.
9:24–27, where he uses a familiar metaphor to illustrate his point: “Know ye not that they who run in a
race run all, but one receives the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.” Everyone in a race runs to win the
prize; that’s why they’re in the race. Believers have been called to race (Gal. 5:7; Phil. 2:16; Heb. 12:1–2)
and to run to win. What is necessary to accomplish that goal? Paul tells us in verse 25: “Every man that
strives for the mastery (competes in athletics) is temperate in all things.” In other words, if a person wants
to experience victory, he has to be self-disciplined. Tremendous discipline is required to keep in shape.
The number of hours an athlete must train so he can win in competition is staggering. An athlete who
competes internationally frequently trains several hours a day for as long as five to ten years of his life.
He must push himself to the point where he will no longer experience pain, to a point beyond a second
wind. There is euphoria beyond pain that only athletes can experience. That euphoria is like an incredible
sense of freedom and energy, and it comes only beyond pain. In verse 27 Paul adds, “I keep under my
body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should
be a castaway [be disqualified because of sin].” He didn’t want to sin and lose the chance for a spiritual
victory any more than an athlete would want to do anything that would disqualify him.

4. Forgiveness Matt. 6:12

The church can’t survive without forgiveness. It’s an important attitude because we’re human and we all
sin. If you can’t forgive someone who sins, particularly someone who sins against you, you have a cancer
in you that’s infecting the Body of Christ. Look how Jesus instructs us to pray in Matt. 6:12: “Forgive us
our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” In other words, “God, forgive us in the same way we forgive
others.” Verses 14–15 tell us, “If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive
you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” If you
don’t forgive other people, God won’t forgive you. Now that isn’t talking about the eternal, redemptive
forgiveness we receive when we accept Christ as our Savior. It’s talking about a parental, temporal
forgiveness. It’s a forgiveness related to current sin. We need to have a forgiving attitude if we want to
have pure, blessed fellowship with God and fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. If you want to be
forgiven by the Lord on a daily basis and maintain a pure, sweet fellowship with Him, you need to have a
forgiving heart toward others. How can you possibly not forgive others? The church needs to be filled
with forgiving people because in this life people are always going to do things that irritate others or cause
problems. If you’re willing to forgive an offender, you’ll be free from the bondage of bitterness. You’ll
also be free to be forgiven by God and experience blessing from Him.

5. Faithfulness 1Cor. 4:2

Many Christians are spiritual sprinters; they get involved, serve for a while with all their energy, but then
go into spiritual retirement. God is looking for marathon runners—people who will run a long distance.
1Cor. 4:2 says, “It is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” Long-term spiritual commitment
is wonderful. If you are true God’s church prove faithfulness in your faithful commitment to God. A
faithful Christian always makes a priority of worshiping, serving, and praying consistently. It’s sad when
people are distracted by other things and don’t keep their priorities right.
