Cardiomuscular System Module 2: Lesson 1

The heart contracts at an average rate of 72 beats per minute. It has four chambers with two atria above and two ventricles below. The inner layer of the heart wall is called the endocardium. The heart lies within the thorax protected by the sternum and ribs. Blood returns to the right atrium via the superior and inferior vena cava. It then passes to the right ventricle through the tricuspid valve. Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium from the lungs via the pulmonary veins, passing to the left ventricle through the bicuspid or mitral valve.
