Lee's Disc Method - Presentation

The document describes an experiment to measure thermal conductivity using Lee's disk method. Key details include: 1) The experiment uses a metal slab in contact with a glass plate, heated by steam flowing through a hollow cylinder. Temperature measurements determine the heat flow and thermal conductivity. 2) An observation table records the metal slab's temperature over time as it cools, to calculate the temperature slope and heat transfer rate. 3) The thermal conductivity of the glass plate is then calculated using the temperature difference, heat transfer rate, and properties of the metal slab and glass plate.

✓Procedure
1. Using vernier caliper, take the readings at the three (or more)
different places on the glass slab to find out its diameter D.
2. Using micrometer screw gauge, take readings at three (or more)
different places on the glass slab to find out its thickness.
3. Note down the room temperature (TR)
4. Note down the temperature of the metal lab and hollow cylinder at
room temperature (T1R and T2R) respectively.
5. Pass steam continuously through the hollow cylinder.
6. Note down the temperature of metal slab and hollow cylinder when
the temperature becomes steady (T1 and T2) respectively.
7. To determine the rate of loss of heat of the metal slab, remove the
glass plate and heat the metal slab to temperature of about T1+10oC.
8. Now while cooling the assembly, record the temperature for interval
of every 30 sec till the temperature is about T1-10oC.
