Lab Report-3: Conservation of Resource and Ecological Footprint Course Code: ENV107L Section: 13

This document is a lab report submitted by a group of 4 students on the topic of conservation of resources and ecological footprint. It includes the students' responses to 9 questions related to analyzing their household electricity bill, identifying opportunities for energy efficiency and conservation, factors to consider when purchasing appliances, and interpreting the results of an ecological footprint assessment. The students provided calculations and explanations for their answers. They also outlined how they divided the work in answering the questions for the report.

Q1. How much did you pay for electricity for that month (Include both
including and excluding vat)? (This may be listed as “Total bill.” Total Dues
(Rounded)” is the amount without VAT. Check to see if your bill includes other
utilities, such as gas, or if your bill covers more than 1 month.)

Answer:
Table 1. Bill for the month of November, 2020.

Electricity Bill for the month of November, 2020

Details Amount in BDT
Total Bill (Excluding VAT) 1009.17
VAT 50.46
Total Bill (Including VAT) 1059.63
Q2. How many kilowatt hours of electricity did your household use in that
month? (This may be listed as “meter usage,” “recorded demand,” “kWh
consumed,” or “electricity usage.”)

Answer:
Kilowatt-hours of electricity consumed in November 2020 – 186 kWh.

Q3. What is the cost you pay per kilowatt hour? (You have to divide the “Total
Energy Charge” by “KWH Consumed”. “Demand Charge” is the charge that
is a set fee paid monthly or seasonally –most customers pay for the energy they
use).

Answer:
Given, Total Energy Charge = 949.17 TK

KWH Consumed = 186 KWH.

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒

The cost I pay per kilowatt hour =
𝐾𝑊𝐻 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑑

949.17 𝑇𝑘
=
186 𝐾𝑊𝐻

=5.10 Tk

Therefore, I pay 5.10 Taka per kilowatt-hour.

Q4. Energy efficiency refers to completing a task using less energy input than
usual. For example, an LED light bulb produces the same amount of light as
other bulbs, but with less energy. Where do you see opportunities to become
more? Energy efficient at your home (mention any two techniques)?

Answer: Energy efficiency means we are using less energy to do the same jobs, reducing our
home's energy waste and saving money. Set out refrigerator temperature to the manufacturer's
recommendation to avoid excessive cooling and wasting energy. Use our microwave instead of
your stove when cooking.

Q5. Energy conservation refers to behaviors and actions that people can do to
save or use less energy. For example, turning off the lights when you leave a
room is an action you can take that reduces the amount of electricity you use.
Write down any two actions you can take to reduce the amount of energy you
use?

Answer: When we are at home, we turn on the power switch after watching television, which
wastes a lot of electricity. So, when we finish watching television, we can convert energy by
turning off the power. We keep the light, fan on even when we are not at home for a long time,
which causes us to waste our electricity. So, it is better not to run the light and fan without the
need.
Q6. Soha is in the market for a new Air Conditioner! One Air Conditioner she
likes is energy efficient, but a bit more expensive and another one is cheap but
consumes more energy. Which one she should buy and why?

Answer:
According to me, Soha should definitely buy the energy efficient Air Conditioner even if it is a bit
more expensive than the other option. The Energy Efficient Air Conditioner is an investment that
is totally worth it because of the following reasons:

 Firstly, the Energy Efficient Air Conditioner will greatly enable Soha to do her part in
saving the planet since this type of Air Conditioners are considerably less harmful for the
environment and henceforth reduces our carbon footprint. Therefore, technically, Soha
would be saving earth’s natural resources without sacrificing the comfort of her home.
 Moreover, an Energy Efficient Air Conditioner will be able to greatly lower the energy
usage, which means it will use considerably less energy to cool the same house than a
normal Air Conditioner would. This incredible performance is due to the many advanced
features the Energy Efficient Air Conditioner is equipped with. And because the Energy
Efficient option consumes less energy over the life of the system, Soha would be able to
save in energy costs. This means the energy efficient Air Conditioner will result in lower
energy bills than the cheaper option which consumes more energy.
 Due to the increased efficiency, energy-efficient Air Conditioners cycle on and off less
frequently and tend to have less damage over time. Since their performance is also superior
and efficient these do not need to be replaced as soon or as often as less efficient systems
which is another plus point.
Most Energy Efficient Air Conditioners also use Environmentally-friendly refrigerants which are
safer for the environment compared to the less energy efficient options which are heavily equipped
with ozone-damaging refrigerants. Thus, it is likely to decrease our environmental impact.
Q7. Explain the results (number of earths, ecological footprint, carbon
footprint and carbon footprint).

Answer:
Number of Earth: My result is 4.5 Earths. That is the result if everybody on Earth has the same
lifestyle as me, it would have needed 4.5 Earth to support the whole population of the Earth, instead
of 1.
Ecological Footprint: My Ecological Footprint is 7.7 global hectares that describe the quantity
of nature to support me. According to biocapacity per person on the Earth, the availability is 1.7
global hectares. So, I am using 4.5 times of the availability.
Carbon Footprint (CO2 Emission): My Carbon Footprint result is 11.7. It means I contribute
11.7 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Carbon Footprint (% of Ecological footprint): My Carbon Footprint result is 53%. It means the
53% of my Ecological Footprint is Carbon Footprint. This Carbon Footprint describes the area
needed to absorb the carbon dioxide emissions generated by me.

Q8. Write down some suggestions to reduce your ecological footprints without
compromising your lifestyle.

Answer:
Some suggestions to reduce my ecological footprints without compromising my lifestyle.

1. Use of renewable energy: I can use solar panels on the rooftop. So some percentage of
the electricity can come from renewable resources.
2. Rooftop gardening: I can grow a few of the veggies and fruit from rooftop gardening. It
will consume some of the carbon dioxide released by me, and as I am producing food, there
is less carbon dioxide release.
3. Recycling my waste: Lands get to fill up because I produce waste. I can recycle and
produce less waste.
4. Use of bike: I can use the bike instead of a car and motorbike when traveling short
distances. It does not release carbon dioxide, and it is a good source of exercise.
5. Support community: I can donate my clothes and food if I don't need it to the local poor
people. I also can help my community with recycling and teaching them the importance of
recycling.
Q9. If your results show that the people on earth need more than one earth to
live like you then how do the people are surviving on a single earth with limited
resources?

Answer:
People in the world would need 4.5 Earth if they used resources like me. But the whole population
of the Earth is surviving in just only one Earth. Some of the population has the privilege to spend
resources like mine, but most of the population on Earth does not have the privilege as I do. As
most of the people on the Earth are underprivileged, so they use fewer resources. As a result,
everything is balanced out because these underprivileged people have a very low ecological
footprint.
