Morse Code: The Basics

Two basic signals make up the entire alphabet in
Morse code—dots and dashes.

1. The dots are symbolized by periods and

represent a quick and rapid signal.
2. The dashes are longer, are symbolized by a
hyphen, and represent a slow signal.

Knowing the timing rules is critical for receiving and sending messages in
Morse code. Here are five simple timing rules to remember:

1. The length of a dot is 1 unit of time.

2. The length of a dash is 3 units of time.
3. The space between the dots and dashes in the same letter is 1 unit
of time.
4. The space between letters is 3 units of time.
5. The space between words is 7 units of time.
