Recall: Revisiting Activity 1: What do we have in common?

Let the students look at the completed table from activity 1 of the previous lesson.

Suppose we want to find the 20th, 50th, and the 100th terms of the sequence. How do we get
them? Do you think a formula would help?

Activity 1: Derivation of the Formula


Lead students to the derivation of formula in finding the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
Let them complete the table below.

How else can we write the term? Study the next table below and complete it.

Representation:
Let a1 = be the 1st term
a2 = be the 2nd term
a3 = be the 3rd term
an = be the nth term
d = the common difference

If a1 and d are known, it is easy to find any term in an arithmetic sequence by using the rule
a n = a1 + ( n − 1) d where,

𝑎𝑛 is the nth term,


𝑎1 is the 1st term and
d is the common difference.

Activity 2: Try Me!


Direction: Solve the following problems completely.

1. Find the 5th term of the arithmetic sequence for which the first term is 9 and the
common difference is 7?

Solution:
a. Since d = 7 and a1 = 9, we can easily find the next 5 terms of the arithmetic
sequence as: 9, 16, 23, 30, 37

b. Given: a1 = 9, n = 5, and d = 7
Find: a5
Substitute the given values in the formula:
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a5 = 9 + (5 – 1)7
= 9 + (4)7
= 9 + 28
a5 = 37
Therefore, 37 is the 5th term or a5 of the sequence.

2. Find the 100th term of the sequence in #1.

Solution:
Given: a1 = 9, n = 100, d = 7
Find: a100
Substitute the given in the equation:
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a100 = 9 + (100 – 1)7
= 9 + (99)7
= 9 + 693
a100 = 702
Therefore, the 100th term or a100 is 702.

3. In the arithmetic sequence 1, 8, 15, 22, …, which term equals 519?


Given: an = 519, t1 = 1, d = 7
Find: n

Solution:
Substitute the given values in the formula:
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
519 = 1 + (n – 1)7
519 = 1 + 7n - 7
519 = 7n – 6
519 + 6 = 7n
525 = 7n
7
n = 75
Therefore, the 75th term or a75 of the arithmetic sequence is 519.
