ECM Microprocessor

DESCRIPTION
The ECM is a computer that is responsible for engine control,
diagnostics, and user features.
This fault code can be caused only by an internal ECM problem.
Repairs are not possible for the ECM.

COMPONENT LOCATION
The ECM is located on the left side of the engine block, behind the
fuel filter.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Connect all components and turn key switch to the ON position. Read the fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
Fault Code 111 inactive?

Yes - Go to 1B No - replace the ECM


Then go to 2A

Step 1B) Turn key switch to the ON position. Check the inactive counts of Fault Code 111 using the
diagnostic tool to read the fault codes.

Fault inactive and no performance-related complaints associated with this fault?

Yes – Go to 2A No - replace the ECM


Then go to 2A.

Step 2A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.
Verify that Fault Code 111 is inactive.

Fault Code 111 inactive?

Yes - Go to 2B No - return to the troubleshooting steps, or contact


your local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all
the steps have been completed and checked again
Then go to 1A.

Step 2B) Connect all components and turn key switch to the ON position. Clear the inactive fault codes
using the diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - the repair is complete. No - troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes
then proceed to appropriate troubleshooting chart.
