VP44 FUEL PUMP SPEED/POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL

CUMMINS LOST

FAULT CODE: 367

PID: P0370

VP44 Fuel Pump Circuit

DESCRIPTION
This fault code indicates that the VP44 fuel pump speed/position
signal is lost.
The VP44 fuel pump determines its speed and position in relation to
the engine by referencing an internal tone wheel gap-Analog signals
are converted to digital.
If the digital signal is not available or if the gap of the incremental
angle sensor tone wheel is not recognized, the pump controller will
set a fault code. Also, rapid speed changes, stalling, or inlet pressure
under 21 kPa [3 psi] can cause this fault code to set.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The speed/position sensor is located in the VP44 fuel pump.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and check to see if fault code is active at engine start-up. Use the diagnostic
tool to read the active fault codes.
NOTE: If Fault Code 367 is inactive, but other fault codes are active, troubleshoot the active fault codes.

Fault Code 367 inactive?

Yes - Go to applicable fault code(s) No - Go to 2A

Step 2A) Disconnect the engine harness from the fuel pump. Turn key switch ON and measure the supply
voltage to the fuel pump while cranking the engine. Measure the supply voltage from pin 7 of the VP44 fuel
pump harness connector using pin 6 as the ground.

6.5 to 18-VDC (12 Volt System)
12 to 27-VDC (24 Volt System)

Yes - Go to 3A No - Check VP44 supply and ground circuits

Go to 6A

Step 3A) Disconnect the engine harness from the fuel pump. Turn key switch OFF and inspect the VP44
connector pins. Use inspection gauge, Part Number 3164980, inspect VP44 connector pins.

Tool can not be inserted into any terminal?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Replace the damaged terminals

Go to 6A

Step 4A) Turn key switch OFF and install the VP44 fuel pump diagnostic tool, Part Number 3163834, to
check the operation of the fuel pump. Make sure air has been vented from the system before using the
diagnostic tool. If replacing the VP44 injection pump, perform a lift pump volume test at the fuel filter outlet
for 25 seconds by bumping the starter. If the volume is greater than 1.33 liter [45 fl-oz], the low-pressure
fuel system is operating correctly.
Engine starts and runs in idle mode?

Yes - Go to 5A No - Make sure air has been vented from the system
Go to 6A

Step 5A) Turn key switch ON and install gauges and record the Inlet restriction, fuel pressure at fuel filter
inlet, and air in fuel content. Install a clear line at the fuel filter outlet and run into a bucket. With gauges and
the clear line in place, bump the starter and leave the key switch ON. The lift pump will run for 25 to 30
seconds. While the lift pump is running, record the following:
• Inlet restriction
• Fuel pressure at fuel filter inlet
• Air in fuel content
If all are okay, measure the amount of fuel in the bucket.

- Restriction is less than 152 mm Hg [6 in Hg]

- Fuel pressure at fuel filter inlet is less than 34 kPa [5 psi]
- No air found in fuel
- Fuel in bucket is greater than 1.33 liters [45 floz]

Yes - Go to 6A No - Fuel filter is restricted. Replace the filter and

check again. If air in fuel is detected, then find the
source of air between the lift pump inlet and fuel
tank. If fuel in bucket is less than 1.33 liters [45 floz]
Go to 5B

Step 5B) Disconnect the lift pump from the engine harness Turn key switch ON and check the lift pump
voltage supply. Disconnect the lift pump from the engine harness, after bumping the starter, use a
multimeter to measure the voltage at pin 1 (engine harness, lift pump connector).
NOTE: Lift pump will run for only 25 to 30 seconds after bumping the starter.

Battery voltage is ± 2-VDC?

Yes - Replace the lift pump No - Inspect the voltage supply circuit
Go to 6A Go to 6A

Step 6A) Connect all components, turn key switch ON and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and
road-test for 30 minutes. Use the diagnostic tool to verify that Fault Code 367 is inactive.

Fault Code 367 inactive?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local
