Fault Code 278-01

The document describes troubleshooting steps for fault code 278 related to the lift pump circuit on a Cummins engine. The lift pump is mounted on the engine block and supplies fuel to the engine. Step 1 involves inspecting connectors and testing the lift pump for proper resistance and no shorts. Step 2 tests the wiring harness and ECM connections. Step 3 clears the fault code and verifies the issue is resolved.

LIFT PUMP CIRCUIT

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 278

PID: P073
SPN: 1075
FMI: 11

Lift Pump Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The electronic control module (ECM) enables the lift pump by
sending a signal directly to the lift pump. The ECM fast-duty cycles
the lift pump ON and OFF during cranking, and it enables the pump
once the engine has started.
- The lift pump is turned on for approximately 5 seconds when the
keyswitch is first turned ON. With the hood raised, it is possible to
hear the lift pump running when the keyswitch is turned ON.
- Loose battery connections can sometimes cause this fault code.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The lift pump is mounted to the engine block on the intake side,
toward the rear of the engine.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the lift pump. Inspect the engine
harness and lift pump connectors for the following:
• Loose connection
• Corroded pins
• Bent or broken pins,
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged connector seals
• Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins
• Connector shell broken
• Wire insulation damage
• Damaged connector locking tab

Dirty or damaged pins?

Yes - Repair or replace the engine harness or lift No - Go to 3A

pump, whichever has damaged pins
Go to 1B

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the lift pump. Check the resistance
of the lift pump. Measure the resistance of the multimeter leads. Make sure this value is subtracted from the
lift pump resistance measurement to obtain the true pump resistance. Measure the resistance from pin 1 to
pin 2 of the lift pump harness.

0.1 to 2.0 ohms (+) 12-VDC lift pump?

0.1 to 4.0 ohms (+) 24-VDC lift pump?

Yes - Go to 1C No - Replace the lift pump

Go to 3A

Step 1C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the lift pump. Check for a short-to-
ground in the lift pump. Measure the resistance from pins 1 and 2 of the lift pump connector, pump side, to
engine block ground.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Replace the lift pump

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Inspect the engine
harness and the ECM connector pins for the following:
• Loose connection
• -Corroded pins
• -Cent or broken pins
• -Pushed back or expanded pins
• -Moisture in or on the connector
• -Missing or damaged connector seals
• -Dirt or debris in or on the connector pins
• -Connector shell broken
• -Wire insulation damage
• -Damaged connector locking tab

Dirty or damaged pins?

Yes - Repair or replace the engine harness or ECM, No - Go to 3A

whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 2B

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the lift pump
connector from the engine harness. Disconnect the OEM harness from the 16-pin connector. Check for an
open circuit in the lift pump supply pin. Measure the resistance from pin 2 of the lift pump connector, harness
side, and engine to pin 15 of the 16-pin connector. Measure the resistance from pin 11 of the engine
harness connector to pin 1 of the lift pump connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2B-1 No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 3A

Step 2B-1) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the 23-pin connector. Disconnect
the negative (-) battery terminal from the battery post. Check for an open circuit in the OEM harness.
Measure resistance from pin W of OEM 23-pin connector to negative (-) battery terminal.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace OEM harness

Go to 3A

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the lift pump. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure resistance from pin 11 of the engine
harness to engine block ground.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Replace the engine harness

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the lift pump. Check for short circuit from pin-to-pin. Measure the resistance from pin 11 of the
engine harness connector to all other pins in the connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes – Go to 2E No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 3A

Step 2E) Turn key switch OFF and connect diagnostic tool and perform lift pump override test. Measure
voltage at the lift pump. Measure the voltage from the terminals on the underside of the pump with the lift
pump connected to the engine harness.

11 to 13 VDC?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Call for authorization to replace the ECM

Go to 3A

Step 3A) Connect all components. Turn key switch ON and connect diagnostic tool. Disable the fault code.
Start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute using the diagnostic tool to verify Fault Code 278 is inactive.

Fault Code 278 inactive?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all the
steps have been completed and rechecked
Go to 1A

Step 3B) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
