AIR CONDITIONER CLUTCH SUPPLY CIRCUIT

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 191

PID: P050
SPN: 876
FMI: 11

Air Conditioner Clutch Supply Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The air conditioner clutch solenoid is a device used by the
electronic control module (ECM) to control the air conditioner by
sending a signal to open or close the air conditioner clutch solenoid.
Air conditioner clutch solenoid could be malfunctioning due to a
failed engine harness or a bad ground on the air conditioner clutch
connector.
COMPONENT LOCATION
Refer to an original equipment manufacturers (OEM) diagram for
the location of the air conditioner clutch solenoid.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the air conditioner clutch or air
conditioner clutch relay. Check the air conditioner clutch for:
• Damaged pins
• Open or short circuits
• Excessive current draw (power air conditioner clutch directly from battery)
• Perform this test in accordance with the OEM instructions

Air conditioner clutch within specification?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Repair or replace the air conditioner Clutch

Go to 4A

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Inspect the engine harness and the ECM connectors for:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the engine harness, or ECM,

whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 4A

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance from
pin 21 of the engine harness connector to pin J of the 23-pin OEM harness connector.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 4A

Step 2C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the
resistance from pin 21 in the engine harness to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2D No - Replace the engine harness

Go to 4A

Step 2D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the engine harness from the ECM. Disconnect the engine
harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Check for a short circuit between pins. Measure the
resistance from pin 21 to all other pins in the connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the engine harness

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the air conditioner clutch solenoid or
relay. Disconnect the engine harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Inspect the OEM harness
and 23-pin connector for:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
• Missing or damaged seals

No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or air

conditioner clutch relay, whichever has damaged
pins
Go to 4A

Step 3B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the air conditioner clutch solenoid or
relay. Disconnect the engine harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Check for an open circuit.
Measure the resistance from pin J of the 23-pin connector on the OEM side to the air conditioner clutch
solenoid or relay.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes – Go to 3C No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 3C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the air conditioner clutch solenoid or
relay. Disconnect the engine harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Check for a short circuit to
ground in the OEM harness. Measure resistance from pin J of the 23-pin OEM harness connector to ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 3D No - Replace the OEM harness

Step 3D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the air conditioner clutch solenoid or
relay. Disconnect the engine harness from the 23-pin OEM harness connector. Check for a short circuit from
pin to pin in the OEM harness. Measure resistance from pin J of the 23-pin OEM harness connector to all
other pins in the 23-pin connector.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let
idle for 1 minute using the diagnostic tool to verify that Fault Code 191 is inactive.

Fault Code 191 inactive?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A.

Step 4B) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.

All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
