A. Talking about the future
We can use different language forms to talk about the future.

 We use going to to talk about what we intend to do and have already decided to do.
My colleague and I are going to attend our Chairman's wedding in Seattle next month.
Some airlines are going to increase fuel surcharges this week.

 We use will or '/I to talk about something we have decided to do at the time of speaking.
The deal's off. I'll call the travel agent to cancel the flights.

 We use the present continuous to talk about a fixed arrangement.


I'm travelling from Australia to Europe in September.

 We use the present simple to talk about a timetable or programme.


The flight leaves Ho Chi Minh City at 11 :30 on Tuesday. It arrives in Danang at 12:40.

REMINDER: Grammar: The Present Simple Tense / The Present Continuous

The Present Simple Tense (Form and Function)


Permanent Truth: a) Wood floats / Birds fly / Gases expand when heated.
Descriptive: a) This is a fire system. It gives fire warnings.
b) I work in Hassi Messaoud and I live in Algiers.
Habitual: a) Every + {second, minute, hour, day, week, month, ....}
b) Each + {time, year, .......}
c) Each and every + {time, year, ...} + Present Simple Tense
d) Often, usually, generally, hardly ever, (Adverbs of time)
e) How often, how many times, .....
f) In the morning / evening / on Sundays / at the moment .....

REMINDER
The Present Continuous: Form and Function
a. An action taking place at the moment of speaking.(Now, at the moment, at present ....)
Example: He is now working in the Geology Department.
b. Action not necessarily taking place at the moment of speaking.
Example : Ahmed meets Kaddour in HMD and says: I’m learning English at SMA Ain El Bia.

Non-continuous Verbs (Stative Verbs expressing a state rather than an action)


Non-continuous verbs are verbs that we do not normally use with continuous tenses. These
"stative" verbs are about state, not action, and they cannot express the continuous or
progressive aspect. Here are some of the most common non-continuous verbs:

• senses: appear, feel, hear, see, seem, smell, sound, taste


•feeling: hate, like, love, prefer, want, wish
• communication: agree, deny, disagree, mean, promise, satisfy, surprise
• thinking: believe, imagine, know, mean, realize, recognize, remember, understand

•other states: be, belong, concern, depend, involve, matter, need, owe, own, possess, etc.
Some exceptions: think as a process: He’s thinking about his job future. Fr. Réfléchir)
BUT: I think she is right NOT *I’m thinking she is right (Fr. Penser)
See as a process : I see what you mean (Je vois/comprends) Not I’m seeing what you mean.
BUT: I’m seeing you at 12.00 (In the sense of meeting you at 12.00).

This coffee tastes delicious. (state – our perception of the coffee)
Look! The chef is tasting the soup. (action – tasting the soup is an activity)
Other verbs include:
agree, appear, doubt, feel, guess, hear, imagine, look, measure, remember, smell, weigh, wish.
