ZNYX: Culture

is an umbrella term which encompasses the social

behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as
the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities, and habits of the individuals in
these groups.

We have the values that helped to shape us into who we are today. In other words, as
we grow older, the cultural values we have learned and adapted to will mold our daily
practices. This is reflected in our actions, behaviors, and the ways in which we
communicate.

But over time, traditional cultures continue to change due to the constant modernity of
time. It is undeniable that many things have changed in our culture and beliefs due to
modern technologies which are a major influence on our current situation.

Let us go back and reminisce the Filipino cultures that have enriched and united us as a
race and customs that we must not forget because this is our identity as a Filipino.
Some Traditions inherited from us by our ancestors who taught us that we can be truly
proud and its changes in modern times.

MICHAEL:

BEFORE: “PAGMAMANO” - Mano or pagmamano is an "honoring-

gesture" used in Filipino culture performed as a sign of respect to
elders and as a way of requesting a blessing from the elder. Similar to
hand-kissing, the person giving the greeting bows towards the hand of
the elder and presses their forehead on the elder's hand.

NOW: In modern time, nowadays, we also practiced ‘beso-beso’ (a

cheek to cheek kiss) or hand shake as a sign of respect and reverence
for other people. We also do fist bump and high five. But “pagmamano”
remains practiced especially with our grandparents.
“PO” AND “OPO” -These are the words that Filipinos are using to show their respect
when talking to elders and/or to someone that they respect.

“Ate”, “Kuya”- used to address an older male relative or friend (especially one's own
brother), and means "brother". "Ate", is in reference to an older female relative or
respected friend (especially one's own sister or kapatid), and means "Sister". It also
used with anyone older than them to show respect and courtesy.

Now: nowadays, there are children who no longer know how to use “po” and “opo” as
well as the use of the terms ate and kuya out of respect for adults.

MEANS OF COMMUNICATION

BEFORE: LETTER- A letter is a written message containing knowledge, news, or

thoughts that a person sends for his or her neighbor. It used to be our way of
communicating with our loved ones who were far away. It is sent by the postman. It
takes a long time to arrive depending on the place of mailing.

NOW: through the internet and gadgets, we can easily communicate with our loved
ones anywhere in the world. Through chat, video call we can easily talk to them. It’s just
one click away.

RUTH: COURTING/MARRIAGE

BEFORE: HARANA- Flowers, letters, and serenades - these are just a few of the things
that signify the traditional way of courtship. The Harana is a serenade tradition in rural
areas of the Philippines in which young men may formally meet single lady visitors. This
is the traditional way of courting before.

NOW: If then, a man had to go to a woman's house to COURT THE GIRL, now they can
court the girl through text or chat. As a result, many couples today whose relationship is
secretive. Sometimes, there are situations where the woman is flirting and showing
motive.
PAMAMANHIKAN- is performed when a woman and a man agree to get married. The
man formally asks for his bride's hand in front of their parents and other close relatives
or friends. After that there was a banquet and at the table the details of the wedding
were discussed. Although modern times, it is one of the remaining customs of the
Filipinos.

FIXED MARRIAGE- Arranged marriage is a type of marital union where the bride and
groom are primarily selected by individuals other than the couple themselves,
particularly by family members such as the parents.

NOW: fix marriage is not so much done nowadays because women and men are free to
choose who they will marry.

Here are the different traditions and beliefs of Filipinos about marriage.

1. The bride and groom are not allowed to meet before the wedding

2. A woman is not allowed to measure her wedding gown before the wedding

3. It is forbidden for siblings to marry at the same time or marry in the same year
because it is forbidden or I calls “sukob”.

4. It is said that the bride is unlucky to wear pearls

JONNEL:

CLOTHING

BEFORE: Do you notice that a lot has changed in our country? Even our clothes. As our
country has modernized, many things have changed from the way we speak to the way
we dress. The change in our dress was one of the influence on the people who
occupied us such as American, Spanish, and Japanese. Almost every year there are
new clothes being released, and almost every year there are also new trends as to how
to wear a dress. Previously women were wrapped tightly in their garments called
filipiniana.

NOW: It is undeniable that the garments of that time were almost long and decent,
compared to the garments of today which are shorter and sexy. Due to the influence of
other countries, the type of our clothing is changing, the trendy clothes are more
enjoyed especially by the young people.

BAYANIHAN- One of the good Filipino customs that Filipinos are really proud of is the
bayanihan. It is the collective cooperation of the people with those in need. A simple
example is moving house
where neighbors work together
to carry things. To this day, this
Filipino tradition is still very
much alive.

WAY OF PLAYING OF CHILDREN

BEFORE: Young people back then were free to play outside in various children's games
that we have been accustomed to such as "patintero", piko, hide and seek and many
others.

NOW: Nowadays, many children prefer to stay indoors and play gadget games such as
Mobile legends. They hardly have the opportunity to play with other children because
they prefer to play with a gadget.
