LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

DEGREES OF ADJECTIVES IN MAKING COMPARISONS
Background Information for Learners
Adjectives are words that describe a noun or a pronoun. They give more
information about the noun/pronoun that goes with it. (e.g. The sky is blue. I like
blue skies and fluffy clouds. He is tall.)
Comparing is an act of examining (two or more objects, ideas, people, etc.) in
order to note similarities and differences. We use adjectives to make
comparisons. Words like longer, colder, happiest, more beautiful, strongest, and
etc.
There are three forms of adjectives used to show varying degrees of
comparison: the POSITIVE, the COMPARATIVE, and the SUPERLATIVE.
The POSITIVE form is used when there is no direct comparison being made to anything
specific, but is used to offer a broad or general comparison. (The Philippines is a very
beautiful country.)
The COMPARATIVE form is used when two things are being compared with each
other.
• Our house is larger than hers.
• This box is smaller than the one I lost.
• Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.
• The rock flew higher than the roof.
• Jack and Jill are both my friends, but I like Jack better.

The SUPERLATIVE form is used when more than two things are being compared
with one another.
• Our house is the largest one in our neighborhood.
• This is the smallest box I've ever seen.
• Your dog ran the fastest of any dog in the race.
• We all threw our rocks at the same time. My rock flew the highest.

1
FORMING COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES is easy. The form depends on the
number of syllables in the original adjective.
ONE SYLLABLE ADJECTIVES
Add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative.

Positive Comparative Superlative Positive Comparative Superlative

big bigger biggest tall taller tallest

sad sadder saddest cold colder coldest

If the adjective ends with [e], add -r for the comparative and -st for the
superlative.

Positive Comparative Superlative Positive Comparative Superlative

late later latest wise wiser wisest

If the adjective ends in a [ vowel + consonant ] spelling (FAT, THIN, WET, etc.),
the final consonant must be doubled before adding the ending.

Positive Comparative Superlative Positive Comparative Superlative

fat fatter fattest wet wetter wettest

thin thinner thinnest hot hotter hottest

ADJECTIVES WITH TWO SYLLABLES

Adjectives with two syllables can form the comparative either by adding -er or
by preceding the adjective with more. These adjectives form the superlative
either by adding -est or by preceding the adjective with most.
In many cases, both forms are used, although one usage will be more common
than the other. If you are not sure whether a two-syllable adjective can take a
comparative or superlative ending, play it safe and use more and most instead.

Positive Comparative Superlative

simple simpler simplest

clever cleverer cleverest

2
Positive Comparative Superlative

tilted more tilted most tilted

tangled more tangled most tangled

For adjectives ending in [y], change the y to an i before adding the ending.

Positive Comparative Superlative Positive Comparative Superlative

happy happier happiest busy busier busiest

ADJECTIVES WITH THREE OR MORE SYLLABLES

Adjectives with three or more syllables form the comparative by putting more in
front of the adjective, and the superlative by putting most in front.

Positive Comparative Superlative

important more important most important

expensive more expensive most expensive

Irregular comparatives and superlatives

These very common adjectives have completely irregular comparative and
superlative forms.
Positive Comparative Superlative Positive Comparative Superlative

good better best much more most

bad worse worst

further / furthest /
far
farther farthest
little less least
