Chapter 7: Comparision of Adj, Adv

I. Equal degree ( Cấp độ ngang bằng )

S1 + be/V + as + adj/adv + as + S2
Eg:
 She is as tall as her sister.
 They drive a car as carefully as their boss.

II. Unequal degree ( Cấp độ không ngang bằng )

S1 + not +be/V + as + adj/adv + as + S2


Eg:
 She isn’t as tall as her sister.
 They don’t drive as carefully as their boss.

* Note:
 Vớ i tính từ dà i cò n đi vớ i cô ng thứ c sau:
S1 + be/V + less + adj/adv + as + S2
 Tính từ ngắn thường có một âm tiết, với các từ có 2 âm tiết thường sẽ có tận cùng:
y,or,er,ow,ew,..
 Trạng từ ngắn: vô cùng hiếm ( fast, hard, early, late, soon)
Eg: There house is less expensive than that one

III. Comparative degree ( So sánh hơn )

1. Short adj/adv

S1 + +be/V + short-adj/adv -er + than + S2


Eg:
 Ho Chi Minh city is bigger than Hanoi.
 He works harder than others.
2. Long adj/adv

S1 + +be/V + more + long-adj/adv + than + S2


Eg:
 This book is (much) more interesting than that one.
 He drives more carefully than he used to.

* Note: Comparatives can be modified by the following words : much, very


much, far, a bit, a lot, any, no even ,still.

o He is a bit taller than me


o This is even worse than that one

IV. Superlative Degree ( So sánh hơn nhất )

1. Short adj/adv

S1 + be/V + the + short-adj/adv -est


Eg:
 She is the youngest.
 He works hardest.

2. Long adj/adv

S1 + be/V + the + most + long-adj/adv


Eg:
 Hien is the most intelligient boy.
 They typed the most quickly.

V. Irregular ( So sánh đặc biệt )

1. Tính từ đặc biệt

Adj Comparative Superlative

good/well Better The best


bad/ill Worse The worst
much/many More The most
little Less The least
far Farther /Further The Furthest
old Older / Elder The oldest/eldest
Eg: I’m better at Maths than Physics
He’s my eldest brother
2. Trạng từ đặc biệt

Adv Comparative Superlative

well Better The best


badly Worse The worst
much/many More The most
little Less The least
Eg: He can speak English better than us
I like this book most

VI. Double Comparison ( So sánh kép )

1. Đồng tiến

The + adj/adv-er +S+ be, the


more + adj/adv V (the)

Eg: The more difficult test is, the worse we do it .


The richer she is, the more generous she is.
2. Luỹ tiến

a) ngắn

S + be/ V + Adj/Adv-er + and + Adj/adv-er

Eg: Our friendship becomes closer and closer

b) dài

S + be/ V + more and more + Adj/adv

Eg: She is more and more hard - working.
