Writing and Balancing chemical equations worksheet
For each of the following problems, write complete chemical equations to describe the chemical
process taking place. NO NEED TO INDICATE THE PHYSICAL STATES. Balance the
equations.
1) When lithium hydroxide pellets are added to a solution of sulfuric acid (H 2SO4), lithium
sulfate and water are formed.
2LiOH + (H2SO4)(aq) = Li2SO4 + 2H2O (l)
2) Magnesium reacts with sodium fluoride to produce magnesium fluoride and elemental
sodium.
Mg(s) + 2NaF(s) = MgF2(s) + 2Na(s)
3) If a copper coil is placed into an aqueous solution of silver nitrate, silver crystals form and
copper (I) nitrate aqueous solution is generated.
Cu(s) + AgNO3(aq) = Ag(s) + CuNO3(aq)
4) When crystalline C6H12O6 is burned in oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor are formed.
C6H12O6(s) + 9O2(g) = 6CO2(g) + 6H20 (g)
5) Calcium carbonate combines with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce calcium chloride,
water and carbon dioxide gas.
CaCO3(g) + 2HCL (l) = CaCl2(s) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
6) Zinc and lead (II) nitrate react to form zinc nitrate and lead.
Zn(s) + Pb(NO3)2(s) = Zn(NO3)2 + Pb
7) Aluminum bromide and chlorine gas react to form aluminum chloride and bromine gas.
2AlBr3(s) + 3Cl(g) = 2AlCl3 + 3Br2(g)
8) Sodium phosphate and calcium chloride react to form calcium phosphate and sodium chloride.
2Na3PO4(s) + 3CaCl2 = Ca3(PO4)2 + 6NaCl
9) Potassium metal and chlorine gas combine to form potassium chloride.
2K(s) + Cl2 (g) = 2KCl(s)
10) Aluminum and hydrochloric acid react to form aluminum chloride and hydrogen gas.
2Al(s) + 6HCL(aq) = 2AlCl3(s) + 3H2(g)
11) Calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid react to form calcium phosphate and water.
3Ca(OH)2(s) + 2H3PO4(aq) = Ca3(PO4)2 + 6H2O
12) Hydrogen gas and nitrogen monoxide react to form water and nitrogen gas.
2H2(g) + 2NO(g)= 2H2O(l) + N2 (g)
