“3 Idiots” directed by Rajkumar Hirani


(Deconstructive Criticism)
The 3 idiots film is about the three college students who are struggling in their studies.
The name of those three college students are Rancho, Farhan and Raju. They take the course of
engineering in one of the India’s premiere colleges but one of them doesn’t really want to
become an engineer rather he wants to become a wild animal photographer but his father insists
him to be an engineer. The title of this movie is 3 idiots because the three main characters here
acts like an idiot. The story begins when Raju and Farhan were looking for their long-lost friend
which is Rancho and the author of this film used the flashback to show the past experience of the
three main characters about their college life and to show the great bond they built in their
friendship. The process of a deconstructive reading by Peter Barry which are the verbal, textual
and linguistic is somehow visible in this movie.

The theme of this movie is about family, love, hope, friendship and education. What may
be the reason for the author to have this kind of theme? I think the reason why the theme is about
family, love, hope, friendship and education is because the author wants to create awareness for
parents regarding the effects of undue parental pressures they put on their children like negative
impacts on students’ educational lives that most of them are dropping out and even doing
suicide. While in educational setting, there are many students who have been pressured to train
as engineers because of the high standards and social value of this profession and the true skills
and interests of the students can be ignored. This movie also shows the importance of having and
choosing a good friend that will help to achieve your goals in life.

I think the grammatical choice of this movie is somehow difficult to understand for
example it is my first time to hear the word “rum” which means “alcohol” and it was stated by
their classmate who challenge them. It is hard for me to understand because I don’t know the
meaning of the word and I need to search it in google just for me to understand the word. In spite
of that, I think this movie will help me to extend my vocabulary.
I think the characters that are seem to be in opposition in this work are the three
characters which are Rancho, Farhan and Raju because the title of this movie defined them as an
idiot but the truth is they are intelligent enough to be able to achieve their goals in the end of the
movie. When we say idiot, it means a stupid person or a person of low intelligence and I think
they are not that kind of person. They become an idiot because of their weird action but they are
smart.

This movie presented an object which is the astronaut pen. The professor said that he will
give the pen for the student who are deserving to have it and they will get it by becoming an
intelligent student. The astronaut pen will be a sign for intelligence. In the middle of the movie,
Rancho saved the daughter of the professor that is why he receive the astronaut pen. Rancho was
very impressive when he delivers the baby even if there is no electricity and that was the time
that the professor was very impressed to Rancho even if they hate each other.

To sum it up, this movie is an eye opener for every young learners, parents and
professors. It will remind parents and professors that pressuring their children and students on
the thing they want them to do will make them miserable that results of dropping out and suicide.
While young learners will realize that taking their life is not a solution for their problems. They
will be reminded that everyone is struggling because life is not easy and the best thing to do is to
fight and give our best in everything and especially we should have faith in God. In addition, this
movie will be meaningful for anyone who has ever struggled to find their bliss.
