Module 3 (Part 1)

This document discusses masonry works including concrete hollow blocks (CHB), estimating methods, mortar, and plastering. It provides two methods for estimating masonry - fundamental and area. It also details volume, area, and hundred block methods for estimating mortar and cement/sand needs. Finally, it discusses plastering and provides volume and area methods for estimating plaster requirements.

MASONRY WORKS

• Concrete hollow block, popularly known as

CHB.

Two (2) Classes of CHB

its weight) dividers)
Estimating Masonry Work
• Masonry works can be estimated by either of
the following two (2) methods;

Estimate by;

FUNDAMENTAL
Divide length and width x results.

AREA
Multiply area by Number of pieces per area
Sample Problem
• Concrete hollow block
wall with a dimension
of 3.0 meters high and
4.0 meters long.
• Compute the quantity
of 0.10 x 0.20 x 0.40
CHB, Cement , Sand
and Gravel needed to
construct the wall.
Solutions
Masonry Estimates
A. Fundamental Method
1. Divide height by the 3. Multiply results of
height of one CHB. Step 1 and 2.

2. Divide the Length by the

Length of one CHB.
B. Area Method
• No. of CHB / sq.m. Step 1:
=12.5 pcs. • Find the wall area

Step 2:
Multiply wall area x No.
of CHB / sq.m.

Three (3) Methods of Mortar Estimates

• Using the same wall

Volume Method
• Adopting 12 mm (1/2”) Step 1:

= .0048 cu. m.
• Formula:
Step 2:
V = Thickness x CHB

Continue Volume Method
Step 3:
V = 15 layers x .0048
= .072 cu.m.
Step 4:
Find Volume of Four (4)

cores.
= .003 cu.m.
Continue Volume Method
Step 5: Refer to Table 4, using

for the 150 CHB Blocks. Cement: =0.522 x 12.0
V = 150 x .003 cu. m. = 6.264 bags.
= 0.45 cu. m. Sand : = 0.552 x 1.0
Add Total Volume: = 0.522 cu.m.
Step 3 + Step 5.
V = 0.072 + 0.45 cu. m.
= 0.522 cu. m.
Area Method
Step 1: Cement : = 12.0 x 0.522
Find the Wall Area. = 6.26 bags
Area = 3.0 x 4.0 = 12 sm. Sand: = 12.0 x 0.0435
Step 2: = 0.522 cu.m.
Refer to Table 5: Along

under Class B mixture.
Hundred Block Method
Step 1: Cement:
• Use the 150 pcs CHB = 1.5 x 4.176
Step 2: = 6.26 bags
• Convert to unit of 100: Sand:
= 150/100 = 1.5 units = 1.5 x 0.348
Step 3: Refer to Table 6: = 0.522 cu.m.

PLASTERING
• After mortar block
laying, plastering is the
next item to consider.
Two (2) Methods:
a. Volume
b. Area

wall area. Step 3:
WA = 3.00 x 4.00 x 2 sides Solve for Cement & Sand.
= 24 sq. m. Refer to Table 4, use 40kg
Step 2: cement, Class B mix.
Solve plaster volume: Cement: = 0.384 x 12
Assume average plaster = 4.6 say 5 bags
thickness of 16mm(0.016) Sand: = 0.384 x 1.0
= 0.384 cu.m.
Area Method
Step 1: Cement:
Find the two (2) sides of = 24 x 0.192
the wall area. = 4.6 say 5 bags
WA = 3.0 X 4.0 X 2 sides Sand:
= 24 sq.m. = 24 x 0.016
Step 2: = 0.384 cu.m.
Solve for the Cement &
