Candidate’s Statement
I was raised in the small town of Temperance, Michigan. I am the oldest of five children
in my family. After getting to know me, it is sometimes easy to tell where I fell in the birth order.
However, my qualities of leadership and hard work can be attributed to my wonderful parents.
My mom was a cosmetologist who was raised on a dairy farm and my dad is an engineering
manager, as well as being a Marine Corps. Veteran. My parents have always shown me what it
means to be supported in a way that fosters my learning and development. As I have gotten
older, I have realized that my parents really are the people I look up to the most. I strive every
day to convey the values, such as compassion and integrity, that my parents have instilled in me.
Growing up I never imagined that teaching would be my passion and calling in life. This
changed when I got to college and realized that my passion was never law. My passion was
helping people and wanting to support others. I had always worked with kids younger than me
growing up, whether it was tutoring or leading classes through agriculture awareness day. My
mom pointed out to me that it was always something that I had excelled at. So naturally I gave it
a shot and instantly fell in love with education.
Before entering the classroom as a teacher, I never realized just how much of an impact
we have on our students. When I student taught in a preschool over the summer, I had many ELL
students who all spoke different languages. It astounded me just how much those students grew
by my efforts to learn from them, instead of just leading the instruction. Watching students learn
and master new skills or knowledge is something I find so fulfilling. A big part of supporting my
students is making sure that my classroom is a safe and welcoming environment for all. Since
my focus is in early childhood, I understand that the way I make my students feel at school will
shape how they view learning. It is my responsibility to try my hardest to make learning a
positive experience for my students.
Going into education you learn that you have to become a “lifelong learner” so
continuous education is something I have thought about often. In the future, I hope to continue
my education in either childhood development or education policy. My goal is to not only be
able to have an impact on my students, but on the education system as a whole.
