Note:
1. Attempt all the questions. Assume any missing data with justification.
2. Write the answers in hard copy (on A4 sheet) using blue/black pen with
your signature on top left and page number on top right corner of each
page of the answer booklet.
3. The time allowed for writing examination is 02 hours. Extra 15 minutes
are allowed for preparing the PDF file of Answer Booklet and
submitting it.
4. Follow the instructions regarding submission of answer booklet as
issued by the examination section.

1 Define the followings: 04

(i) Landfill Leachates
(ii) Primary and Secondary Sludge
(iii) Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate
(iv) Mean Cell Residence Time

2 Discuss various methods of landfilling. Describe various 04

aspects in the implementation of landfills.

3 Write Short Notes on the followings: 04

(i) Water Quality Classification
(ii) National Ambient Air Quality Standards

4 An air stream is flowing at the rate of 1200 m3/h at a 04
temperature of 60oC. It contains particles with a density
of 1100 kg/m3. If the number of effective turns is 06 at
the inlet velocity of 12 m/s, determine the diameter of
the particles that will be removed with 80% efficiency
using this cyclone.

5 A municipal wastewater treatment plant processes an 04

average flow of 6000 m3/d with peak flow as high as
12000 m3/d. Determine the dimensions and detention
time of the primary clarifier at 35% removal efficiency
for BOD. What would be removal efficiency for BOD at
peak flow?

6 A 1000 MW power plant with a load factor of 70% and 06

an efficiency of 40% uses coal as a fuel source. The coal
has 1% sulphur content and a calorific value of 35
MJ/kg. The Stack height is 150 m and diameter is 6 m.
Determine the sulphur di-oxide concentration during
cloudy winter night at 10 km downwind and 500
crosswind of the plant. Given the wind velocity at
ground level is 3.0 m/s, flue gas velocity is 18 m/s,
temperature of flue gas is 160oC and the ambient
temperature is 25oC.

7 A municipal wastewater having a BOD of 225 mg/L is to 06

be treated by a two-stage trickling filter. The treated
wastewater should have a BOD of 20 mg/L. The flow
rate of wastewater is 8000 m3/d with a temperature of
25oC. The BOD removal efficiency of the primary
clarifier is 35%. The efficiency of first stage filter is 80%
to that of second stage filter. The depth of both the filters
is to be 2.0 m and recirculation ration is 2:1. Determine
the dimensions of both the filters to achieve the
efficiency.

8 An industrial wastewater treatment plant discharges 08
secondary effluent into a stream flow having following
characteristics, for Wastewater, maximum flow rate =
9000 m3/d, BOD5 = 50 mg/L, DO content = 2 mg/L, and
Temperature = 30oC and for Stream, minimum flow rate
= 0.6 m3/s, BOD5 = 4 mg/L, DO content = 7.0 mg/L, and
Temperature = 20oC. Complete mixing of the wastewater
and the stream is almost instantaneous and the velocity
of the mixture = 0.2 m/s, equilibrium concentration of
oxygen in fresh water = 8.7 mg/L at mixing temperature,
de-oxygenation constant = 0.23/d at 20oC, and re-
aeration constant = 0.4/d at 20oC. Determine the
dissolved oxygen concentration at 25 km and 50 km
downstream.
