Detailed Lesson Plan (DLP) Format: Instructional Planning

The document outlines the detailed lesson plan format for a math lesson on variations. It includes the learning competency, key concepts, objectives, and procedures. The lesson will review translating variation statements into mathematical equations. Students will solve word problems involving direct, inverse, and joint variations. They will analyze solutions and examples to distinguish the unknown, identify the variation used, and determine the constant of variation. The lesson aims to help students understand and apply the concept of variations to real-world problems.

Solve problems involving variations
(Taken from the Curriculum Guide) M9AL-II-c-1
There are real-world situations where two variables are related to each other such that if one of the
quantities increases or decreases, the other quantity also increases or decreases in specific ways.
This is the concept of variation in mathematics. This variation consists of four types, namely: Direct,
Inverse, Joint and Combined.
Direct Variation: For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes an increase in y as well.
Similarly, a decrease in x causes a decrease in y.
Key Concepts / Understandings Inverse Variation: For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes a decrease in y or vice versa.
to be Developed Joint Variation: This may involve three or more variables such as physical relationships (area or
volume).
Combined variation is another physical relationship among variables. This is the kind of variation
that involves both the direct and inverse variations.
The statement "z varies directly as x and inversely as y" means z = kx / y, or k = zy / x, where k is
the constant of variation.

4.1 Introductory Activity equation.
1. The weight of a circular disc varies jointly as the square of its radius and its thickness.
2. The time required to lay a cemented driveway varies directly as the length of the driveway and
inversely as the number of workers.
3. The intensity of light varies inversely as the square of its distance from its source.
5 minutes 4. Variable P varies directly as L and inversely as the square root of G.

Goup activity:(For answers, see 2nd quarter Appendix 12)

4.2 Activity Solve the problem based on the variation used in it.
The price (P) of pizza varies directly as the square of its diameter (d). If the diameter of a pizza is 20
cm, it costs Php 180. What is the cost of a pizza whose diameter is 30 cm?

4.3 Analysis 1. How do you feel the activity?

2. Do you have any difficulty in distinguishing the unknown?
3. What is the variation used in the problem?
4. How did you find the equation of the variation?
5. What are the operations involved in solving the variation? What is the constant of variation?

There are real-world situations where two variables are related to each other such that if one of the
quantities increases or decreases, the other quantity also increases or decreases in specific ways.
4.4 Abstraction This is the concept of variation in mathematics. This variation consists of four types, namely: Direct,
Inverse, Joint and Combined.
Direct Variation: For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes an increase in y as well.
Similarly, a decrease in x causes a decrease in y.
Inverse Variation: For two quantities, x and y, an increase in x causes a decrease in y or vice versa.
Joint Variation: This may involve three or more variables such as physical relationships (area or

Combined variation is another physical relationship among variables. This is the kind of variation
that involves both the direct and inverse variations.
The statement "z varies directly as x and inversely as y" means z = kx / y, or k = zy / x, where k is
the constant of variation.
Example:
The amount of money solicited at a fundraising campaign is directly proportional to the number of
attendees. The amount of money solicited for 4 attendees is Php 35, 000. How much money was
solicited for 30 attendees?
10 minutes
Solution:
The problem is an application of a direct variation.
Equation: A = kn ; A for the amount of money and n for the number of attendees
35000 = k(4) ------ by substitution the values
k = 8750
Solving for the amount of money to be solicited from 30 attendees:
A= 8750n
A = 8750 ( 30)
A = 262, 500
Therefore, Php 262,000 is solicited for 30 attendees.

4.5 Application Group work:(For answers, see 2nd quarter Appendix 12)
Solve the problems completely.
1) A car consumes 14 liters of gasoline to travel a distance of 180 km. How much gasoline will the
car consumes to travel 400 km?
15 minutes 2) The area of a triangle varies jointly as its base and its altitude. The area of a triangle with an
altitude of 24 cm and a base of 4 cm is 48 cm 2. Find the altitude of a triangle of equal area whose
base is 6 cm.

4.6 Assessment Individual work:(For answers, see 2nd quarter Appendix 12)
1. The volume (V) of a circular disc varies jointly as its thickness (T)
and the square of the radius (r) of its face. The volume of a certain
circular disc with a radius of 5 cm and a thickness of 6 cm is 75 cm 3.
Find T if V = 150 cm3 and r = 5 cm.
Tests 2. The wavelength (w) of a radio varies inversely as its frequency (f). A
15 minutes radio wave with a frequency of 1600 kH has a wavelength of 240m.
Find the length of a radio wave with a frequency of 120 kH.

Think and answer this:(For answers, see 2nd quarter Appendix 12)
4.7 Assignment The frequency of a piano string varies directly as the square root of the
tension and inversely as its length. Find the effect on frequency if:
Enhancing / improving the day’s a. The tension is quadrupled.
lesson B. The length is halved.
3 minutes

4.8 Concluding Activity "When you find no solution to a problem, it's probably not a problem to be solved, but a truth to be
2 minutes accepted."
