I. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
A. OPEN BOOK. Below are articles about polynomial function and its graph. Read the selections and
select which is the best article that shows the illustration of polynomial functions and shows the
description and interpretation of its graph. After the third article, write your answer in the given table.
You are allowed to refer to your module or available references (e.g. textbook) and the Internet.
You are NOT allowed to ask help from your classmates, parents, guardians, relatives or any other adult.
Before submitting, make sure you have followed the instructions on how to answer.
ARTICLE 1:
⮚ The Leading Coefficient Test is a test to determine the end behavior of the graph of polynomial
function by describing the leading term. It comes with 4 cases.
1. If the degree of the polynomial is odd and the leading coefficient is positive, then the graph falls
to the left and rises to the right.
2. If the degree of the polynomial is odd and the leading coefficient is negative, then the graph
rises to the left and falls to the right.
3. If the degree of the polynomial is even and the leading coefficient is positive, then the graph
rises to the left and rises to the right.
4. If the degree of the polynomial is even and the leading coefficient is negative, then the graph
falls to the left and falls to the right.
⮚ The graph of a polynomial function is continuous and smooth and has rounded turns.
⮚ A polynomial function of degree n has n-1 turning points.
⮚ Every polynomial function of the nth degree cannot have more than n roots.

ARTICLE 2:
Polynomial functions are the most basic functions in algebra. Examples of these are the linear
functions, square functions and cube functions. Rational functions are quotients of polynomials.
Polynomials and rational functions are very useful in satellite dishes, projectile paths, economics,
geometry, ecology, weather, biology and others.
A function is a polynomial function of degree n if: 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 + 𝑎𝑛−1 𝑥 𝑛−1 + 𝑎𝑛−2 𝑥 𝑛−2 + ⋯ +
+𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎0 , where the coefficient a are real numbers: 𝑎𝑛 ≠ 0 and n is a positive integer.
We know that if f(x) has degree n = 1 then the graph of f is a straight line, and if f(x) has degree
n = 2, then the graph of f is a parabola. Let us see how the graphs of polynomial f(x) with degree n ≥
3 behave.

ARTICLE 3:
A polynomial function of degree n is a function of the form (𝑥) = 𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 + 𝑎𝑛−1 𝑥 𝑛−1 + 𝑎𝑛−2 𝑥 𝑛−2 +
⋯ + +𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎0 , where n is nonnegative integer, and an, an-1, an-2, .. a0 are real numbers, and 𝑎𝑛 ≠ 0.
The degree of a polynomial function is determined by the highest power of its terms.
The graph of a polynomial function is smooth, that is, the graph has no sharp corner.
Directions: After reading the three articles, decide which of the three is the best article that shows the
illustration of polynomial functions and shows the description and interpretation of its graph. Discuss
your choice and support your answer with quotations or statements from the chosen article.
